It’s Time to Take Charge of Your Health

by Kevin Smith Author

For many people, taking care of their health is something that’s always in the back of their mind. Most people know that getting regular exercise, watching what they eat, drinking enough water, and getting plenty of sleep should be on their priority list, but often people forget about the other major components of health. Read on to learn about women’s health, finding a female gynecologist in The Woodlands, and ways you can take charge of your health and live your best life.

Annual Checkups

For most women, an annual wellness check with a doctor is a smart way to catch and prevent many common health problems. Checking your vital measurements like resting heart rate, weight, and blood pressure is a simple yet effective way to check in with your body’s overall health. Getting labs done can ensure that things are healthy in your other systems. Common issues for women often involve cholesterol, thyroid, and iron, so getting those checked is recommended. You can also get breast and pelvic examinations done to ensure things look and feel normal and healthy.

Pap Smears

If you are between the ages of 21 and 29, it is recommended that you get a Pap smear done every 3 years. If you are between the ages of 31 and 64, you should get a Pap test and HPV test done every 5 years. If you are over the age of 65, you can talk to your doctor about discontinuing your Pap tests. A Pap smear tests the cells of your cervix for abnormalities, and it is important to get them done so you can catch any potential issues as soon as possible.

Mammograms

Another part of taking charge of your health is keeping breast health on your radar. Women between the ages of 40 and 44 can choose to begin annual mammograms, and these annual screenings are recommended for all women between the ages of 45 and 54. After 55, women can either continue with annual screenings or opt to have them done every other year. If you have a family history of breast cancer or find anything suspicious, talk with your doctor about your concerns. Monthly self-checks are also a good idea to keep an eye on things between appointments.
