If you think about it, footwear is like clothing. There are so many styles, trends, and attitudes about what we wear from head to toe.

Fashion's Empress

Diana Vreeland, the late great fashion editor of Vogue and Harper's Bazaar Magazines, once said this:

"You gotta have style. It helps you get down the stairs. It helps you get up in the morning. It's a way of life. Without it, you're nobody. I'm not talking about lots of clothes."

Ms. Vreeland was right. Everyone has their favorite garments that give them an individual style. You don't need a huge collection to attain style, however. You should wear what makes you look great, feel comfortable and confident in and defines who you are.

Classics Never Fail

If you're too timid to wear bright colors, fancy trends or anything that calls major attention to an ensemble, then, don't do it. It's really alright. You don't have to follow the fashion sheep if you will.

Invest in classics that stand the test of time, and build a wardrobe around them. For instance, a pencil skirt is a timeless piece that looks universally flattering on every silhouette. A hip-length blazer is another wardrobe staple that can work with casual to formal looks.

When it comes to footwear, a sleek pair of leather riding boots is a classic that goes well with pants, leggings, dresses, and skirts. The heel is short, and it offers much versatility.

Speaking of classic footwear, a good quality pair of designer sneakers will never go out of style and looks incredible on every woman at every age. Talk about getting a lot of bang for your buck.

Today, modern women wear sneakers to more than the gym. The top runways have all featured models in designer clothing wearing sneakers that look timeless and chic with suits, dresses, jeans and more.

Be Happy Being You

Just because the power shoulder is back doesn't mean you have to redesign your wardrobe and start tossing out your regular blazers, for instance. You don't have to be addicted to fashion trends. Be happy with yourself, and only wear pieces that you don't feel foolish in.

The strong shoulder pad trend is a runaway favorite for now, but not every woman likes the look, and not every woman will be decked out in the 1980s bold silhouette of jackets and coats, dresses and blouses.

Even the famous Washington Post had a little fun poking at the strong shoulder comeback.

No Style-Slave

Your clothing and footwear reflect a lot about you and create your unique style. If you're happy in the fashion that allows you to feel confident, comfortable and ready to take on the world, then, wear it. Never be a slave to styles that don't let the real you shine through.

Style icon Diane von Furstenberg has access to all the clothing in the world and happens to be an iconic fashion designer. She's now a grandmother of three and doesn't dress to impress others or keep up with trends. She says her style is basically the same, but she's older now and does her thing:

"My body isn't the same, my face isn't the same, and blah, blah, blah, but I have lived, and my experiences are part of who I am. I enjoy being me, and that's the thing."

Amen to that.
