Is There a Difference Between a Breast Augmentation and a Breast Enlargement?

by Lewis Obi Doctor

When thinking about surgery, the terminology for a breast enhancement will vary, especially when it comes to changing breast structure. Breast enlargements and augmentations are basically the same thing. While an enlargement is standard terminology, augmentation is used in the medical field.

Breast Augmentations: What are they?

Augmentations are performed to increase the breasts’ shape and size for a variety of reasons. Breasts are a critical part of a woman’s anatomy. They help boost confidence and self-esteem.

Why should you have a breast procedure done?

Countless reasons exist for having the procedure done. When breasts start to lost their shape, surgery can help to restore the youthful appearance of your chest. If a women isn’t satisfied with her looks, this is a quick and easy way to fix that. Common reasons are:

·         To restore alignment

·         To increase the size and shape in smaller breasts

·         To restore breasts after dealing with a severe illness

·         To restore shape and size after weight loss or giving birth

Enlargement Methods

Implants are commonly used for enlarging breasts. They vary in size, consistency and shape. Implants are commonly put in to increase the shape and form of the breast. Three types are available:

·         Saline implants are filled with saline. The saline can easily be modified to change the shape, feel and consistency of the breasts. If they start leaking, it isn’t that big of a deal because the body will absorb the saline naturally.

·         Silicone implants have a gel within the silicone shell. If they begin leaking, there is more risk involved. They need to be checked regularly using an ultrasound or MRI to make sure they aren’t leaking.

·         Alternative composite implants are filled with a number of natural materials. They also need to be checked regularly.

What happens in the procedure?

This three-fold process requires anesthesia and consists of the following:

·         An incision is made in the armpit, under the breast or around the nipple. Many factors go into determining the incision site, such as the size of the implant, type and the best option for the patient.

·         Implants are then inserted into the breast.

·         Incisions are closed using reinforced surgical tape and stitches.

Recovery Time

Every patient is different. Expect pain and swelling following the procedure. It takes an average of six weeks to recover without doing any heavy lifting or strenuous movements that could cause the area to get aggravated. You will be told the proper type of bra to wear and how to best care for your stitches.

Risks Involved

All surgeries come with risks. Many of the risks can be avoided by following the instructions provided to you. Common problems include pain, ruptures, leakage, infection, fluid build-up and bleeding. If you notice any of these problems, you need to seek attention immediately. If the procedure is done correctly, you will enjoy your new breasts.
