Is There A Cure for Dark Eye Circle?

by Andy Cheng Director

The skin around the eyes are the thinnest on the body. It is precisely because of the very delicate area around the eyes that the first signs of aging typically appear there.

Formation of dark eye circle is probably one of the most common complaints people have about their eyes. Most of us who have it know that dark eye circles are notoriously difficult to get rid of.

We speak to Dr. Siew Tuck Wah, Medical Director of Radium Medical Aesthetics to give us some tips on how we can effectively get rid of the panda eyes and look more rejuvenated and less tired.

What Are Dark Eye Circles?

Dr Siew: Dark eye circles appear darker than the surrounding skin because of the dark blemishes that form below the eyes. The darkening of the area could be due to the blood vessels underneath the skin or pigmentation of the skin.

To determine what the dark patch is, press on the dark area firmly for about 20 seconds. If the darkening lessens, you are probably dealing with visible blood vessels.

What Are Some Common Causes of Dark Eye Circles?

Dr Siew: Skin allergies, such as eczema, chronic irritation from makeup, genetics, and environmental damage can lead to formation of dark eye circles. Some medical conditions can also cause the eyes to itch. When people scratch and rub the eyes, it can exacerbate the formation of dark eye circles.

Certain medications lead to the dilation of blood vessels. When blood vessels around the eyes dilate, the increase in blood flow shows up very easily under the eyes because of the thin layer of skin.

Lack of sleep may also contribute to the appearance of dark eye circles. When one does not have enough sleep, the eyes become more tired and the skin may appear pale. The dark patch below the eyes may show up more easily.

Aging can also contribute to formation of dark eye circle. As we age, our body slows down the production of collagen. Skin around the eyes become thinner and dark eye circles become more visible.

Are There Some Home Remedies to Reduce Dark Eye Circles?

Dr Siew: One of the most popular ways is to combine almond oil with vitamin E and apply a thin layer on the area before you go to bed. Leave it on overnight and you should see some improvement in a few weeks.

Another option is to use raw potatoes to apply on your eyes. Potatoes contain natural bleaching agents and when applied on the dark areas, they help to lighten the dark eye circles effectively!

Any Effective Treatments for Dark Eye Circles?

Dr Siew: At Radium Medical Aesthetics, we offer some effective treatments to address the dark pigments underneath the eyes.

Under Eye Dermal Fillers are best suited for people who want to see immediate results. It is also ideal for people who appear to have sunken eyes. When there is a loss volume around the eyes, dark eye circles may become visible. Under Eye Dermal Fillers help to plump up the skin by introducing tiny amounts of hyaluronic acid to hydrate the undereyes. Wrinkles and fine lines will also reduce in appearance with the hyaluronic acid fillers.

Because of the thin layer of skin, correcting the sunken under eye area is very fulfilling, but the doctor’s skills and techniques are very important to create a natural, yet good result.

Using a copper bromide technology, Dual Yellow Laser is one of the most advanced laser machines in the market today for treating several skin pigmentation problems, including melasma, rosacea and dark eye circle.

There are also unique anti-aging eye treatment programs such as Eye Resurrection Program to restore volume and create smoothness to the under eye area. Another unique program is called  Eye Revival Program Ultimate which combines an range of powerful treatment such as Eye Renewal Laser Resurfacing, Eye Renewal Laser ResurfacingTriPollar Eye Lift, and Ulthera.
