Is ghee vegetarian: Suitability of ghee for a vegan diet

by Mitun Mukherjee Milkio food product

Ghee is a dairy-free item that is made from pure milk butter. But, is ghee vegetarian? To know the answer we need to discuss in detail veganism and vegetarianism. Vegetarians don't consume any form of meat, or non-vegetarian items like eggs, fish, etc. However, the concept of veganism is more stringent and it forbids any kind of meat, eggs, and all other animal-sourced goods such as leather and silk. So let’s discuss the suitability of ghee for a vegetarian diet.

Is ghee vegan?

The straightforward answer is no. As we all know ghee is made from cow's milk and so it is not a vegan product. But it is considered a vegetarian product as it doesn't include any milk solid parts during its making. The clarifying process of ghee eliminates the lactose and casein part from butter. Ghee is made from unsalted butter in a slow cooking process which gives ghee a golden yellow color. Those who are sensitive to dairy products can consider ghee as a better replacement for butter.

So now you have the answer to the question, 'is ghee vegetarian'. Prefer to use grass-fed ghee that is a dairy substitute without lactose and casein. There are several other vegan ghee substitutes available in the market, but they are not as nutritious as ghee. This dairy staple is suitable for keto, paleo, or any other LCHF diet. However, if you are following a strict vegan diet, then ghee is a no-go for you.
