Introduction To Yoga & Massage Therapy By Humble Professional Massage Therapist

by Joseph H. Stoddard Massage Therapist
These days the world is a very busy place.  We’re spread out and spread thin and we all spend quite a lot of time and energy keeping up with it all.  Our daily routine has become very hectic and busy, and a good amount of us generally spend most of our time at the office (or commuting to and from) and working hard to earn a living. In this race of life we have started ignoring our health and wellness andusually a proper diet and regular fitness activities are the first things to go when we’re pressed for time.

Time is precious, but so is life.  When you feel like you’re doing everything in your professional life to take care of yourself and your family, but you’re still not feeling well, where do you turn?  There are many different forms of physical activity out there.  In my opinion, none are bad as long as it gets you up off the couch and doesn’t harm you or anyone else and you feel good about doing it.  However, not all forms of activity have the ability to offer wellness to all aspects of your being.  A traditional activity that has proven effective in all facets of life is Yoga.

Yoga is different from other gym and fitness activities in that it helps to balance both physical and mental fitness and, for some people, spiritual wellness. People often join a gym with good intentions but soon they get bored doing the same exercises and/or routines, which makes it easier and more likely they abandon exercise altogether.  When boredom sets in, yoga can be the perfect solution.

Yoga is a very useful and proven form of exercise which has offered incredible results to millions of people over thousands of years. It is a different and highly popular practice which has its roots in ancient India but has gained importance throughout the world.  There are many different aspects of Yoga practice, but most are familiar with the physical postures called asanas. Asana practice was originally developed to keep the body fit in preparation for long periods of seated meditation.  However, in modern times where most no longer employ a regular seated meditation practice, asanas have become a familiar sort of moving meditation. It requires a great deal of concentration and mental toughness to hold poses or get into shapes not familiar to us in day to day life.  Regularly tackling different poses and combining them with mindful breath provides many with the tools to deal with obstacles presented outside of a mat or yoga studio.  There are many other advantages of yoga as well, such as weight loss, immunity development, stamina building, stress relief, increased flexibility, and spiritual well-being. Yoga can also be used to address chronic pain and can help one recover from injury if done carefully on a regular basis.  In addition, when the frustrations of life get us down or negative thoughts occupy the mind, yoga can act as a friend and helpus deal with challenging issues and bring about a peaceful mind.

You don’t have to be a yogi to practice yoga. And you certainly do not have to be fit or flexible to practice.  In fact, one of the reasons yoga has become so popular is that anybody and everybody can practice. There is a style of yoga out there fit for any body or personality type, so, if you’re new to the practice, take your time before settling on a style.  Watch different videos, visit different studios, and take classes from different teachers.  And if all of the choices and information out there gets to be a bit overwhelming, or if you don’t want to travel outside of your home to practice, feel free to contact a local teacher and ask for guidance.   You’ll know when you are where you’re supposed to be.
