Kelly Richards scam

September 26, 2010|By Brian Heap | KWCH 12 Eyewitness News

(NEWTON, Kan.) — Kelli Richards of Newton is a mother of three.  She works from home and earns about $9000 a month.  At least, that’s the case if you believe everything you read on the internet.

“I wish”, says the newlywed from her small two bedroom apartment in Newton.

Richards, who now goes by Kelli Pease, after her marriage last December, says she became worried someone was using her to promote an internet work from home scam.

Last week, a stranger on Facebook contacted Kelli to ask questions about the part-time job that pays her so much money.  Kelli had no idea what the stranger was talking about.  That???s when she read what appeared to be an online news story featuring quotes from Kelly Richards, a mother of three from Newton, KS.

???There aren???t any other Kelly Richards???s in Newton.  I???m the only one and I never said any of those things,??? she tells FactFinder 12 Investigators.

Turns out the news story is fictitious ??? made up by scam artists trying to legitimize a work from home scam.  In fact, the hoax is so popular on the internet it???s actually known as the Kelly Richards scam.  The use of the name Kelly Richards is coincidence, but the fake Kelly being from Newton is no accident.  The BBB says there???s a phony Kelly Richards in every city in the country.  The people behind the scam learn your location from the IP address of your computer and use the information to place Kelly in your city.   Their hope is you???ll be more convinced if the person in the story is from your same city.

???I just want people to know about it, because there are a lot of people looking for jobs where they can work from home,??? says Kelly.

The Better Business Bureau offers the following advice for avoiding work from home scams:

  • Overstated claims of product effectiveness
  • Exaggerated claims of potential earning, profits, or part time wage earnings
  • Claims of  ???inside??? information
  • Requirements of money for instructions or products before telling you how the plan works
  • Claims of ???no experience??? necessary."
