The very first message to be sent between two computers - a breakthrough that helped usher in the internet and Mail Online - was sent 40 years ago, but crashed after just two letters were received. Celebrating at a small party Kleinrock, who led the team that first got two computers to communicate online via a network called ARPANET, added: 'The internet is a democratising element; everyone has an equivalent voice. There is no way back at this point. We can't turn it off. The Internet Age is here.'
The computer expert could never have imagined that the fledgling internet would one day give rise to Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. He referred to spam emails, online scams and malicious software spread by crooks as an unexpected dark side of the internet.
'The net is penetrating every aspect of our lives,' Kleinrock told a gathering of about 200 people in Los Angeles.
'As a teenager, the internet is behaving badly, the dark side has emerged. The question is when it grows into a young adult, will it get over this period of misbehaving?'
2004 Facebook Launches and has become one of the biggest websites with over 800 million members worldwide communicating in over 70 languages. Rate of growth projected at 7.5% for 2012.
Security News Daily December 2011 reports Spam Hits Lowest Point Since 2008, and now make up just 70.5 percent of all emails, according to Symantec's new Intelligence Report. Symantec's report suggested that the decrease in spam volume may be a result of the recent takedowns of the Rustock and Coreflood botnets, massive international networks of spam-spewing computers that the FBI disarmed earlier this year.
According to Internet World Stats 2011 we have over 2,095,006,005 users online, a penetration of 30.2% of the world’s population and a growth of 480.4% for the years 2000-20011, increasing each year.
The year 2010 has been one of the worst years for online scams, with a 111.4 percent increase of malicious website creation since 2009. Websense, the leading information security company, made their online scam statistic findings public. Websense reports that this year, 79 per cent of malicious codes were found on legitimate, trusted websites such as search engine Google or blogging center WordPress. While e-mail scams decreased by 0.7 percent, nearly 90 percent of fraudulent e-mails referred the reader to a malicious site, and 9 percent of scams still happen through e-mail alone.
However, check your Phones. Mobile Phones are being used for nearly everything today – protect your identity and telephone number, 2012 is bound to bring us an increase in phone scams, spam and malware. How many messages are you willing to receive per day before your throw away the phone?
The numbers are still coming in for 2011 and on. Are you prepared to do business online and do you know how to recognize and avoid the Scams?
