Interior Design Elements: Making Your Indoors Look Fabulous
by Kris Mccreerys McCreery's Home FurnishingsEmpty rooms can be imposing to anyone who does not have an
interior design know-how. You must know the interior design elements before you can even begin working on
beautifying your home. These elements are your raw materials so you have to
know how to use effectively use them.
Here are the basic elements of interior design –
Space
This is the prime material in all interior designer’s
palette. Through space, you can visualize forms, feel the wind, and hear
different sounds. Space absorbs whatever aesthetic and sensual features the
surroundings have. Space can be anything from wood or stone. In essence, it has
no true definition; as soon as an element is introduced on its midst, it soaks
it up and becomes it.
Geometric elements like line, point, volume and plane can be
used to define space. Architecturally speaking, these basic elements are
transformed into planar walls, linear columns, ornate roofs and beautiful
floors.
More often than not, you are not able to determine space,
instead, you are left with the challenge to utilize the space in the most
effective manner.
Color
In a nutshell, colors can affect your mood so they have a
very powerful impact when it comes to the overall feel of the room. Since every
shade comes with a particular psychological value, think hard before you invest
in the paint or wallpaper that you buy. If you find it hard to decide on your
own, read decorating books, magazines and blogs. Choose a limited range of
colors since too many colors can create a cluttered look.
Line
This is second only to color in relevance when it comes to
creating the mood in a room. Lines come in dominant forms such as horizontal,
vertical or diagonal. Your choice of highlighting the lines’ direction will
define the kind of mood that you want to create.
Lines are also fused to create planes and shapes and
finishes can be used to set up strong lines in a space. Horizontal lines tend
to evoke grounding, stability, direction and emphasis. Mostly this kind of line
creates length and lowers the ceiling but they can be effectively used to
highlight a certain focal point.
Vertical lines, on the other hand, are associated with
stability, strength, elevation and balance. These lines extend away from man’s
visual plane, hence, it can create artificial altitude.
Form
Lines that are fused together can form a particular shape
which then puts an impact in a room. Straight lines can be used to create
squares, rectangles and triangles. Curved lines are responsible for ovals and
circles.
The term form is often used in architecture but it is just
as important in interior design. Form is often referred to as form and space. This term describes the
relationship between solids such as the ground, walls and ceiling and empty
space in which such solids take form.
Rhythm
Interior design defines rhythm in a visual, repetitive
pattern. This can be recurrence, continuity, or organization. To be able to
achieve a workable theme in your design, you must know how to achieve
repetition, progression, contrast and transition. Use these to have a semblance
of movement in your space. Rhythm can take the eye from one element to the
next.
