Interesting Burger Facts

by David Mickel Educational Management

Fact Find 1

Worldwide, 60% of all sandwiches sold are burgers.

We've all heard it said it's what's inside that counts, that true goodness goes beyond aesthetics and resides at the core of us as humans. This applies to all aspects of our existence, from how we are in the world to the foods we choose to consume. It holds that the once humble burger, that simple gesture of meat in a bun, has evolved along with us. Today we choose food that is pleasing to the palate, nutritionally attuned to our bodies, ethically farmed, and environmentally sustainable. The goodness of what we eat comes from a combination of all these ingredients. The burger, like all of life, holds its goodness inside. It is the impressive variety of toppings that tips the taste dial, so let's take a look at the insides that makes today's burgers count.

Cows, Chickens, and their Planted Pals:

The classic beef patty arguably holds court as the most popular choice of burger. There is however an increasing appetite in today's market for meat that is ethically farmed and unadulterated. Grass-fed beef is billed as a healthier and more environmentally friendly option to conventionally farmed beef. Nutritionally superior grass-fed beef has a smaller carbon footprint making it better for our bodies and our planet.

Chicken burgers are an increasingly popular option on today's menus. Free-range chicken considers the welfare of the animals in its farming methods. The nutritional quality of the meat is superior when there is no processing, hormone use, or genetic modification.

Vegetarian and vegan patties made with chickpeas and vegetables feature prominently on today's burger menus. The majority of burger toppings are already plant-based making the burger a versatile choice for vegetarians.
