Infertility treatment in Delhi: How clinics deal with pregnancy bleeding
by Dr. Manika Khanna Gaudium IVF CentrePregnancy is an amazing
journey, but it may not be blissful for all. Some women may come across dire
complications during this time. Those who have conceived after a tough bout
with female infertility are more likely to be stressed out by these. One of the
complications that bring a lot of concern is vaginal bleeding. Pregnancy
bleeding is scary indeed but it may not always be the reason to worry. Patients
taking infertility treatment in Delhi need to be aware and differentiate
between bleeding that is dangerous and one that is not.
Bleeding
during pregnancy after IVF treatment in Delhi: It’s all about timing!!
The timing of pregnancy
bleeding is the deciding factor that tells whether it is dangerous or not. It occurs
at various times during the pregnancy due to different reasons. Sometimes it
may be risky for the baby and the mother while at others, it may mean nothing. However,
those who have conceived after IVF should
be extra vigilant.
First
Trimester Bleeding: The first 12 weeks of gestation are
delicate ones and a large proportion of women bleed during this time. Here are
some common causes of first trimester bleeding:
1: Implantation
bleeding is caused when the embryo gets implanted in the uterine lining. It
usually occurs at 6-12 days into conception, sometime around the expected
menstrual period. It is usually very light and happens for only a few hours. It
is completely harmless and does not happen to all women.
2: A
woman may bleed after sexual intercourse too. This could happen due to a
vaginal or cervical infection. Another possible reason is the abrasion of the
cervix that has been sensitized due to pregnancy. Women taking infertility treatment
in Delhi are recommended abstinence
after such an incident.
3: Molar
Pregnancy refers to abnormal tissue growth within the uterus, instead of embryo
growth. It has symptoms similar to a normal pregnancy. Vaginal bleeding is
common in such a pregnancy.
4: Ectopic
Pregnancy is another reason of first trimester pregnancy bleeding. It is a
dangerous condition when the embryo gets implanted in the fallopian tube instead
of the uterus. It may get life-threatening if the tube is ruptured. Once an
ectopic pregnancy is confirmed, it should be removed immediately.
5: First
trimester vaginal bleeding can also be an indication of miscarriage. A large
number of women experience it after bleeding. The risk is higher if bleeding is
accompanied by cramping and passage of tissue through the vagina. The woman
should immediately consult her gynecologist in such a case.
Second
and Third Trimester Bleeding
While first trimester bleeding
is not always dangerous, it is a cause of concern when it happens in later
pregnancy. Patients who have become pregnant after IVF treatment in Delhi should
go for immediate medical intervention if something like this happens. Following
are a few possible reasons of vaginal bleeding in the second and third
trimester:
1: Placenta
Previa refers to a low lying placenta that obstructs the birth canal fully or
partially. A grave complication, it is usually manifested in the third
trimester. The condition requires immediate medical help.
2: Another
probable reason could be vasa previa, a rare condition characterized by the
baby’s blood vessels in the placenta reaching the birth canal opening. The
risks are high as the blood vessels may tear open and restrict the oxygen
supply to the fetus. The fetal heart rate may also be affected.
3: Sudden
and heavy bleeding accompanied by severe abdominal pain and expulsion of clot
is an indication of placental abruption. It is a rare but fatal condition that
puts the mother and baby at risk.
4: Uterine
rupture after tearing of a previous C-section can also cause vaginal bleeding.
The infertility clinics in Delhi conduct an immediate C-section surgery for
such cases.
5: Preterm
labor could be yet another reason of bleeding during late pregnancy. A
premature labor is indicated if bleeding is accompanied by abdominal cramps,
vaginal discharge and periodic contractions.
Bleeding during
pregnancy may or may not be a problem. Yet it should be taken seriously and the
woman must consult her gynecologist about it. The specialist would suggest an
ultrasound scan to find out the exact cause and handle the situation
accordingly.
