Usage of coal is primarily associated with fuel generation but this carbon-rich fossil also offers a myriad of applications that are essential for many industries. Coal is the element that fuelled the growth of the Industrial Revolution back in the 15th -the 16th century and continues to cater to the necessities of the industrial world to date.

Being the backbone of industries like cement, steel, and even electricity, coal is the substance that channels life into modern day industries and life in general. Till the time renewable sources of energy such as wind, water, and solar energy will entirely develop and mature, coal will continue to rule the realm of the industrial world.

To mention a few, here are the industries that coal supports.

Electricity Production: Popularly known as the thermal coal, steam coal is used in most power stations in India for electricity production. It produces electricity through coal combustion which, in turn, creates a lot of energy. KCT Group in India is a major supplier of coal for most electricity stations in India with transmission facilities to even the remotest corners of the country.

Steel Industry: After electricity, this is the second largest industry which uses coal. Coal is an essential raw material for the steel industry and used in the production of other metal products as well.

Cement Industry: A large amount of energy is required in the production of cement, which is why coal is used as an energy source in cement industry. The powdered form of coal is burnt to produce a substance called fly ash which is utilized as concrete in cement.

Paper and Aluminium Industry: Both the industries require a large amount of fuel and energy which can only be provided by coal. Since coal is the cheapest form of energy, it plays an important role in the growth of these industries.

Chemical and Pharma Industry: There are several chemical products that are obtained as the by-product of coal such as refined coal tar which is used in the manufacturing of several coal products. Some of the chemicals produced by it are benzene, phenol, and creosote oil.

Coal Gas or Liquid: These two things are used as a transportation fuel and the modern-day world literally operates on these two substances.

Among the major players that keep the demand-supply chain satisfactory in India include companies such as Coal India and KCT Group.
