The present pandemic has spread the wave of fear not only in the citizenry of the U.S but also around the world. And, it is no fool’s story that proper care has to be taken when dealing with pets though they might not show the plausibility of any symptoms of the disease spread through corona virus. In the wake of the current situation, veterinarians are guiding pet owners especially cat owners to take care of their feline friends if they are under self-isolation or showing any signs of COVID-19.

A veterinary body advised that pet owners should keep their pets indoors to stop them from carrying and transferring the virus on their fur to others. “Animals can act as fomites – items that can become contaminated with infectious organisms, and could hold the virus on the fur if they are petted by an infected person,” stated a veterinary association.

Therefore, it becomes vital to ensure the safety of yourself and your pet and, especially if you’re under self-isolation or having minor signs of novel COVID-19.

To help you overcome this period along with your pet, here are some tips by the Veterinary Association for Pet Parents to care of their furry friends.

  • Keep your pets indoors during self-isolation time
  • Practice good hand hygiene
  • Pets need not be removed from homes where COVID-19 has been identified in the family member
  • Shampoo your pet regularly, maybe thrice a week
  • Protect them with monthly heartwormer as it is also mosquito season
  • Treat with effective flea and tick treatment because it’s also a threat looming along with covid-19

These are simple tips but quite effective that can help you to keep your pet healthy and fit. Moreover, it is also important for you to take care of yourself during this unprecedented period.

"It is very important that people don't panic about their pets. There is no evidence that animals can pass the disease to humans," the VA said. "From the small number of cases, it appears that dogs do not show symptoms, but cats can show clinical signs of the disease."

Therefore, it is crucial to take all the necessary steps to safeguard your cat and yourself during such testing times.
