I'm Not Flexible Enough, I'm in Pain

by Neighborhood Trainers Finding a trainer is a personal choice

Flexibility allows you to bend and stretch into positions without experiencing pain or being restricted by the joints and muscles. When the body is not flexible, it can result in pain when performing activities like bending or reaching for items. Stretching is a way to relieve pain, but why are you in pain? Finding the underlying cause of pain can keep you from causing injury to the body.

Stretching is not meant to be painful, so if you feel as though it is uncomfortable to bend into normal positions, a Manhattan yoga professional can help you gain flexibility without injuring yourself. Even though yoga is low-impact, there is still a chance that injuries may occur. If you don’t like working out in yoga studios, or if you prefer a more hands-on approach, a personal trainer can conduct yoga sessions in a designated area to relieve pain.

A Pilates Manhattan class is another way for flexibility to be increased. Pilates, much like yoga, increases joint and muscle flexibility. You will be challenged to perform movements that get the muscles moving and loosen tight joints. These movements, when done correctly, can alleviate pain associated with muscle stiffness and low flexibility.

Why am I in Pain?

As stated above, stretching is not meant to be painful. If you feel pain in a muscle, there are some reasons this may occur.

·         Improper stretching: It is important to make sure that stretching routines are done properly. Stretching an area too far can cause pain and damage tissues in the body. Passive stretches, such as grabbing the toes with the hand, should be done with care to avoid further pain.

·         Muscle damage: Muscles can be damaged while doing an activity or playing a sport. When there is pain present in the affected area, it can take several weeks for injuries to heal properly. Continuing to stretch the area can cause further damage and prolong the healing process.

·         Stretch types: There are several ways to stretch, but some may be more comfortable for individuals to perform than others. Stretches like ballistic stretching does not give muscles a chance to relax, which can cause them to tighten and result in pain.

If you experience pain when stretching, make sure you consult with a fitness professional before continuing any exercises that may cause further damage. Your health is important and putting excess pressure on damaged ligaments can jeopardize your physical health and performance.
