Hybrid and multi-cloud: What You Need to Know About Them

by Tech Addict Writer, Blogger
Cloud computing has emerged as one of the most sought-after technologies, thanks to the flexibility and benefits it offers. So, as cloud deployments continue to be a rage in the technology and development world, it is now time that we spoke about some questions that have been long on most people’s minds, such as what is multi-cloud and hybrid, are they the same concepts, etc. Now, to answer these queries effectively, it is imperative to first understand what these two types of cloud deployments mean otherwise.

First up, hybrid cloud: This refers to the union of public cloud computing with either one of the two: on-premise infrastructure or private cloud computing. A rather common phenomenon by now, it enables businesses to partially transition to the cloud (if used together with on-premise infrastructure) and retain better control over specific elements.

Time to talk about multi-cloud deployments: Unlike hybrid cloud deployments, multi-cloud deployments involve a mix of different public clouds. With such a setup, a business may reserve one public cloud service for use as a database, whereas the other public cloud is for access to a service that the previous cloud service provider didn’t offer.

Now, it is time to take a quick look at the similarities between the two types of cloud deployments, before we discuss how the two are differentiated.
    1. Both, hybrid- and multi-cloud offer immense scope for agility
    2. Both of them make use of a mix of different clouds
    3. Whether you opt for hybrid cloud or multi-cloud, you will be able to adapt the service engagement plan based on your needs and budget.
    4. Neither one of the two necessitate extensive investments in external infrastructure.
Okay, let us now walk you through some of the key differences between these two types of cloud deployments to help you make an informed choice for your app development projects.
    1. Multi-cloud uses different public cloud service providers: As noted above, a multi-cloud deployment makes use of multiple public cloud services that are usually sourced from distinctive service providers. The different clouds may serve different purposes, based on the organization’s objectives: They could either help the company avoid vendor lock-in or perhaps serve different roles to help achieve optimal performance.
    2. Hybrid is a mix of public and private cloud services: Where multi-cloud is restricted to the use of public cloud services, hybrid is much more flexible in this regard, i.e. it can make use of both public and private cloud deployments. Not only that, but hybrid cloud deployments can also involve the use of virtual and physical infrastructure.
    3. Connectivity: Yet another critical point of difference between multi-cloud and hybrid cloud deployments is the kind of connectivity the business gets. With a multi-cloud setup, the different cloud providers typically operate individually. This is not the case with hybrid cloud deployments though — they offer a direct link between all the cloud deployments they opt for in the setup.

As you can see, both of them may seem similar but are, in fact, quite distinctive. Sure, there are a handful of similarities between them, but once you carefully consider the differences, it becomes evident that each is engineered to serve a unique set of requirements. So, when you kick start your cloud project, be sure to carefully pick your cloud strategy to ensure the success of your endeavors.
