Our smartphones play a huge role in our lives. All our tasks related to school, office, games, etc. becomes easy with this smart device. If stolen or lost, our lives come to a standstill, and it means a loss of money and essential files and data one had on their smartphone. It is no wonder why people start panicking when their smartphone is not in their sight. Fortunately, the iPhone users have it a little easy with the Find My app on their phone. Not just the iPhone, you can also find your iPad, iPod, and MacBook with this app.

If you are having a lousy day finding your phone, then the following guide will help you use the Find My app locate it:

Open Find My App

Recently, Apple combined the ‘Find My iPhone’ and ‘Find My Friends’ apps from the previous Apple devices, and the amalgamation came out as ‘Find My’ app. With this app, you can find any of your lost Apple devices. It shows you the directions for reaching your device, and in the meantime, it secures the device with lock.

As soon as you figure out that you’ve lost your phone, sign in to the Find My app using any other device. But there are two ways to do it, i.e., either sign in from another Apple device or use iCloud’s website from any device. If you’re using any of your Apple devices, then you can easily spot the Find My app as a stock app in your iOS, iPadOS, or macOS. Use the Spotlight search function in case you can’t find it. On the app, go to the Devices tab to see the list of all the Apple devices linked to your Apple ID.

If you’re using the iCloud website from any smartphone or desktop, then sign in to your Apple ID. After signing in, click on the Find iPhone button to see the list of all your connected Apple devices to this ID. The web version of the Find My app offers similar features so you can locate your lost or stolen device quickly.

Find the Device’s Location

After signing in to your Apple ID account, you should see a map showing the location of all your devices. Any Apple device (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, or AirPods) connected to your Apple ID will appear on the screen with its unique pin on the map. This feature requires Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connection to find the exact location of all your devices. But, remember that the location is accurate within a few hundred feet only.

In case the Find My app shows your iPhone as offline, then you’ll only be able to check the last known location before going offline. Offline devices appear with a black screen in the Find My app. The black screen can also indicate that your device ran out of battery or someone turned it off.

Also, the app can work only if the Find My iPhone, iPad, or iPod toggle is turned on in the settings of your missing device. Although Apple enables this option by default, you might have turned it off by signing out of your Apple ID. If the toggle is off, you cannot find your device.

Enable Notification

Don’t lose hope because if your lost iPhone is offline, you can ask the Find My app to notify you when it turns back to online mode. You might get lucky when someone turns on the device or connects it to the Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.

To turn on the notifications, use these steps:

  1. Click your lost offline device from the Find My app.
  2. Scroll down to find more options, and click on Notifications.
  3. Enable the ‘Notify When Found’ option.

Now, you’ll get a notification via Find My app and email about your lost or stolen device’s location. ‘

Get Directions

When your lost iPhone comes online, use the Find My app to get directions to its location. To do so, select your lost device from the Find My and click on Directions. The app will direct you to the Apple Maps showing a route to your lost device. It is unsafe to locate your stolen iPhone by yourself. Instead, use the following instructions to enable Lost Mode and inform the police.

Play a Notifying Sound

The Find My app offers a vague location for your lost devices, but you can use it to play a loud sound, making it easier to find when you’re nearby. To do so, select your device in the Find My app and click on Play Sound. Soon, you’ll hear a sound gradually getting louder, until you find your device and turn it off.

Enable Lost Mode

Use the Lost Mode to suspend Apple Pay and lock your device. You can also create a passcode and use the feature to display a message on the screen asking whoever finds it – this device belongs to you. To enable Lost Mode, select your device on the Find My app and swipe up to see more information. Under the Lost Mode section, click on Activate. Then follow the instructions appearing on your screen to create a passcode and write a message for people to see when they find your iPhone.

These methods will get you closer to your phone and will keep it safe until you find it. Note that using the Find My app, you can erase all the data from your lost iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. Use it only if you don’t want to look for your device anymore.
