How to Spot High Quality Olive Oil

by L&P Global Wine & Olive Oil Exporter
Not all olive oils are identical! In fact, some olive oils sold in the market may be greasy and taste putrid, which isn’t what real olive oil is about. Some might even say the quality of olive oil depends on the harvested olives – a fact that, while true, isn’t the measure of its real quality. To learn what makes high quality olive oil is to learn what to expect in olive oil.

Olive Oil

Here are some tips on how to spot high quality olive oil.

Check for the “extra Virgin Olive Oil” Label

“Extra virgin” is the highest grade olive oil can attain. In fact, not all olive oils produced can pass the standards required to be labeled extra virgin. So, anything less than extra virgin olive oil is a lower quality olive oil, and you can always skip it.

Find the Harvest Date

Bottles sans harvest date label or “pressed on” label are more susceptible to being a low quality olive oil. These labels aren’t the same as “best before” or “bottled on” labels. The harvest date can tell you how fresh the olive oil is, whereas a “bottled on” label can only provide information on how long the olive oil has been bottled, not necessarily noting if it had been harvested right before the bottling.

If you can find more details on the bottle of its harvest date, the more assured you can be of its quality.

Use Your Senses

High quality olive oil tastes like raw nuts and vegetables, and fresh grass with a somewhat spicy and peppery aftertaste. Its intensity depends on the olive’s variety. The oil will become milder as it ages.

Olive oil that isn’t as fresh is greasy with an unpleasant aroma, and taste rancid like stale nuts.

Check the Country of Origin

The largest producers of olive oil globally belong to Spain and Italy respectively. Spanish olive oil is known to be of high quality, so make sure to check the label for it. Luckily, you can stock up on high quality olive oil with a reliable Spanish olive oil supplier like L&P Global.
