How to Sharpen a Pocket Knife using a Sharpening Stone?

by Perry Knife Works Buy Online Knives

Although there are a multitude of knife sharpening methods, using a sharpening stone is the easiest. You can get these stones at most of the hardware stores and what you choose depends entirely on your preference and the function of the tool.

If your pocket knife is not working properly or making it difficult to perform certain tasks, it is time for you to get a sharpening stone and learn how to use it. There are multiple ways to sharpen a knife but using a sharpening stone is by far the easiest and the best way. These stones have two sides- a rough and a fine grit. You start the process with the rough grit and then flip to the fine grit in order to hone the sharpness of the blade. For those who want to sharpen their pocket knife with a stone, here is a step by step guide:

Prep the sharpening stone

Start by prepping the rough side of the sharpening stone. If you are unable to identify which side of the stone needs to be sharpened, you can perform a scratch test on the stone with your fingers. Moreover, the rough side will be more porous than the other side and will absorb more liquid than the latter. When you have identified the coarse side t is time to lubricate it. Make sure you use enough lubricant but don’t end up thoroughly soaking the stone with the emollient.

Set the right angle

Make sure the angle between the stone and the knife is consistent. In case of a pocket knife, the angle should be ideally between 10 and 15 degrees. Lay the blade flat on the stone with the edge of the blade on the stone. Then, raise the back of the knife to the required angle.

Glide each side of the knife

After setting the right angle make uniform strokes with your blade across the stone. Twist the knife slightly at the edges to ensure nothing is missed. Start with running one side of the knife over the stone for 5-6 times and repeat the process in the opposite direction for another 5-6 times.

Use alternating strokes

Sharpen one side of the knife and then the other in sequence. Performing alternating strokes will bevel the knife. Bevel is the sharpened part of the knife.

Repeat the whole process

Flip the stone to the finer side and repeat the whole process. After applying sufficient lubricant on this side of the stone, run each side of the blade for 5-6 times on the stone and finish off the process with alternating strokes. Don’t forget to clean the lubricant from the stone after completing the process.
