How To Reduce The Windscreen Debris In An Accident

by Novus AutoGlass Novus Auto Glass

If you’ve been in a car accident then you know all too well what happens to your windscreen after a crash. The windscreen will either smash into a million pieces or crack like a spider web and hold all of the pieces together. But what happens if you’re left to clean up the mess? A simple safety guide would tell us to wear gloves and protective ear wear to prevent further injury. Thankfully, there is also a simple step by step procedure that shows you how to remove broken glass safely.

According to metroautoglass.com.au, our windscreens and side windows are made from safety glass acquired by the OEM (Original Equipment manufacturers). Our windscreen glass is made to sustain an immense amount of force during an accident. The front windscreen is made of three consecutive layers consisting of a plastic laminated layer between two layers of glass. This is to ensure that every piece of glass holds its structure in the event of an accident. After the accident has happened, removing the debris of glass is important and should be completed with caution. Howcarswork.com, has an illustrated guide on how to safely remove broken windscreen glass.

Stay Calm

When the windscreen shatters, it will make a loud noise. It may frighten you at first, but try to stay calm. If you can see, try and pull over safely. If the glass is starting to fall into the car, try and hold it together using the palm of your hand.

Removing The Debris

Once, you’ve pulled over safely, assess the damage and determine whether you should clear the glass yourself. If you think it’s safe enough to remove the debri, make sure you have protection for your hands such as gloves of pieces of thick cloth and for your eyes like safety glasses. Once you are fully protected, lay a piece of cloth or sheets of paper on your bonnet. Then slowly push the broken glass on to the bonnet making sure it lands on the cloth or paper. This to prevent your vehicle from being scratched.

Safe To Drive?

Once you’ve removed all of the broken glass, is it safe to drive screenless? If it is, drive to the nearest windscreen specialist. If not, contact the nearest glazier and sit tight until they arrive. It’s important to understand that driving with no windscreen can be dangerous if you’re not careful. Sometimes, depending on what speed you’re driving, the pressure can build up and can change the aerodynamics of the vehicle. In this case, it’s safer to wait for help.
