How to Properly Teach Kids Fireplace Safety

by Kevin Smith Author

Keeping your kids safe around the fireplace in your home is a lot more than just knowing who to call when you need Dallas fireplace repair, although that is important. No matter what you do, and often in spite of your best efforts, fire accidents can happen. Here are some things that you can do if you have a fireplace and children to keep your little ones safe.

Have a Family Plan in Place

You can be doing everything right and still face a fire in your home at some point. Make sure you have a clear family fire plan and practice it annually. Your kids should know from a young age how to get out of the house in case there’s a fire. They should also know how to dial 911 once they’re at a safe distance away from the home. The plan should also include where the family is going to meet once out of the house.

Teach Kids How to Use the Fireplace

While it may seem like a good idea to just keep your kids away from the fireplace altogether to avoid having them get hurt or worse, this isn’t exactly reasonable. Kids will be kids, and there will likely be times they express interest in the fireplace or even in the blazing fire inside.

You don’t have to hand your child a box of matches and let them loose to teach them, it’s important that they are aware of the dangers and know what to do in case of an emergency. Have your kids get involved when you build the fire and let them help you with fireplace-related chores, such as cleaning out the fireplace area and keeping the area around it tidy.

Be Sure Any Fire Is Supervised

Even if you’ve taught your kids how to properly operate a fireplace, and no matter how confident they feel in being able to start a fire on their own, make sure there’s always an adult supervising any time there are children around the fireplace. Chances are, if you’re letting them be involved in maintaining the fireplace and chimney, and if you’re letting them be present and watch as you build your own fires, their natural curiosity for fires will likely dampen their urge to build a fire when your back is turned.

A clean and properly maintained chimney and fireplace is much safer than if you neglect it entirely. You need a team of professionals to make sure that everything is in good shape and is as safe as it can be. Great info. We need to teach our children about fire safety to prepare them for any kind of fire-related hazards.
