How to Prepare for an Earthquake

by Daisy Warfel Survival Master
If you have ever lived through an earthquake or if you have recently moved into an area that is prone to earthquakes, you may be wondering how to prepare for one so that you can go through it successfully. In reality, there are numerous things that can be done to help prepare for an earthquake but there are some items which are more important than others. Here is a brief overview which can help you to get ready for an earthquake so that you and your family can survive.

The most important thing to consider in preparation for an earthquake is to have earthquake kits available at your home and in your automobile. These emergency kits are going to be invaluable and will not only help you to be comfortable during that time, they can make a difference between life and death. What are some of the items that should be included in an earthquake emergency kit?

The most important things for you to consider in such a kit are water, food and first aid items. In choosing water, try to put enough aside that will help your family with drinking water and sanitary use of water for up to three days. Food should be easily stored for an extended amount of time and can be canned, although you would want to include a can opener in your earthquake kit. Finally, first aid must be able to handle both large and small problems. It's a good idea for you to have Band-Aids and some gauze but make sure you also have first aid for larger injuries, just in case they occur.

Communication is also something that should be considered when preparing for an earthquake. You need to be able to communicate with your family effectively, especially if your children are older and you tend to be in different locations most of the time. Keep in mind, the infrastructure may be damaged to the extent where cell phones are not going to work properly. If that occurs, you will want to have a backup plan, such as two-way radios. It may be a little inconvenient to carry these with you at all times but there are some small radio options now which can easily fit in your pocket.

Preparing things around the home should also take priority, such as attaching shelves to the walls and installing any gas shut off valves that are necessary in case an earthquake should occur. Fire is one of the biggest problems that may take place during an earthquake so you should have automated valves on your gas lines so that they shut off if a seismic event occurs.

Finally, review this information with your family on a regular basis and make sure that everyone is prepared in case of this type of a situation. When you prepare for an earthquake properly, you will find that you are not only ready for a seismic event, you are well prepared for other issues which could arise and would impact your family in a negative way.
