Recently, Microsoft has released an update known by the name KB4078130 for all the Windows 10 PC to disable the microcode update from Intel which was only meant to fix the Spectre processor susceptibility. While the Intel is also started releasing out a microcode update to address the spectre related issues, but as it turns out with the latest update had its problems which can result in sudden reboots and also some random behaviours such as data loss and corruption.

However, the KB4078130 update is available for all the versions of the Windows 10, Windows 7, and also Windows 8.1, but Microsoft is recommending to download and install the update on affected devices to disable the mitigation called as the CVE-2017-5715, “ Branch Target Injection Vulnerability.

Though this update isn’t available via any Windows Update, that means you must download the patch from the Microsoft Update Catalog, and then double-click on the file to install it. Steps to Manually Disable Intel’s Spectre Mitigation

Microsoft is providing few instructions to manually disable and enable the Spectre Mitigation by making changes to the registry. But before starting the process, we suggest you to use these instructions in the given sequence to avoid troubles and errors. The steps are discussed below:

  1. Click on the Start button.
  2. Now, search for the Command Prompt option
  3. Then, right-click on the top results and then chooses the Run as Administrator option.
  4. After that, type the below given commands to disable the disable variant 2: CVE 2017-5715”Branch Target Injection:
  • reg add “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management” /v FeatureSettingsOverride /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
  • reg add “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management” /v FeatureSettingsOverrideMask /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
  1. Then, hit Enter key on each line.

When the steps are completed, you will need to restart your computer system to apply all the changes.

Again, if you want to enable the updates, then follow the below given steps:

  1. Click to launch the Start button.
  2. Now, search for the Command Prompt option.
  3. Then, right-click on the top results and then chooses Run as Administrator option.

  1. Finally, press Enter on each lines.
  2. Restart your system for all the changes to take effects.
