How to Manage Your Dog’s Chronic Pain Naturally
by Robert Johnson Blogs on Latest News Not long ago, researchers believed that animals did not experience pain in the same ways humans do. We now know that this is not true- animals feel pain as much as we do. Rather, dogs instinctively hide pain as a survival mechanism. What they cannot do, however, is verbalize that they’re in pain. Therefore, it’s up to us, as loving pet parents, to look for pain signs and take action accordingly.Natural pain treatments are growing in popularity among pet owners, mainly because a growing number of pet owners believe traditional medicines are either not enough or too harsh on animals. If you’re looking for natural ways to help your dog manage pain, consult the points below.
1. Licorice
Licorice has been used for thousands of years to manage common veterinary ailments like upset stomachs and ulcers. It’s also preferred for its ability to relieve inflammation and itching. One of the primary chemicals in licorice is glycyrrhizin, a chemical which acts like cortisone; this hormone is released from the adrenal glands when a person is highly stressed. Glycyrrhizin is also known for its anti-microbial properties, and it supports the immune system as well. Licorice can also be applied topically to help your pet manage skin disorders like psoriasis and eczema.
2. Turmeric
Turmeric has long been used in traditional medicines, like Ayurveda, to manage arthritic pain and other types of pain humans commonly face. For some time now, proponents of holistic healing have used turmeric to help their pets manage stiff and achy joints. Curcumin, an active ingredient in turmeric, is primarily responsible for turmeric’s anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, anti-fungal, and wound-healing properties. You could add a little turmeric to your dog’s food, or make a paste of turmeric. Feed the paste to your dog with freshly ground pepper, coconut oil, and water.
3. CBD
Pet CBD products are gaining popularity in a lot of places. Cannabidiol, one of the many compounds found naturally in the cannabis plant, is known to offer a wide range of benefits, including relief from pain, stress, and even noise phobia. But not all CBD products are made the same. Hemp-derived CBD is preferred over CBD that’s derived from marijuana. Also, hemp derived from CBD has a very low percentage of Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the compound that’s known to have psychoactive properties. When buying CBD for dogs, make sure the CBD is derived from hemp and containing less than 0.3% of THC. Also, the CBD must be derived from high-quality hemp, i.e. hemp that’s organic and free of any pesticides or solvents.
4. Boswellia
Boswellia, commonly known as frankincense, was used in ancient India and Egypt for its anti-inflammatory properties. It’s also given to pets suffering with arthritis to maintain proper joint movements. Boswellia is known to contain phytochemicals that can stop the production of leukotrienes, the molecules that cause inflammation.
