How To Maintain Acrylic Creations?

by Reg Burn Plastic Fabricator
Acrylic is a wonderful thermoplastic used for making various items like visual displays, signage, cases, and so on. Although the material is shatter-resistant and durable, it is excessively vulnerable to scratches and abrasions. In order to maintain anything made out of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), exercising proper care is essential. Experts specialising in fabrication of Plexiglass and Perspex in Sydney recommend certain measures for cleaning, fixing and safeguarding acrylic items. They have been described below in detail:

Cleaning:

In order to properly clean anything made of acrylic, one must always utilise some special non-abrasive product designed just for thermoplastics. Never should any window cleaner be used for removing the dirt on Plexiglass or Perspex. This is because they can contain ammonia, denatured alcohol, gasoline, acetone or carbon tetrachloride, which are may create fine cracks on an acrylic surface.

Before cleaning, any loose dirt or dust should be removed using a piece of cloth. After that, the speciality product (in case such a product is not available, using water and soap solution would also do the trick) must be applied using a dampened cellulose sponge or microfiber cloth. Once the surface has been cleaned, it should be rinsed with clear water and then blotted dry with chamois for preventing water spotting.

Removing Scratches:

Small scratches and abrasions can, sometimes, be removed from acrylic. There exist a number of techniques, the most effective one being application of a thin coating of automobile or floor wax. The wax must be buffed away lightly after a few minutes using a damp cloth. Another method is to apply a mildly abrasive polish for removing fine to heavier abrasions and haziness.

Safeguarding:

While working with a brand new acrylic sheet, its protection has to be ensured by leaving the protective film on. There are several good products available in the market that can be used for imparting a lustrous shine to an acrylic item as well as eliminating static, resisting fogging and repelling dust. Also, it is common sense that abrasions on any Plexiglass or Perspex item can be avoided by keeping them from dropping on the ground.

In addition to following the above mentioned tips, it is also important to observe some precautionary measures for maintaining acrylic. Never should any sharp tool, like a putty knife or razor blade, be used for eliminating dirt. One must also avoid cleaning the surface of an acrylic item with abrasive pads, gritty clothes or abrasive cleaners.
