How to Keep Using Time Machine When the AirPort Time Capsule is Disconnected?

The AirPort routers by Apple brought a huge change in the world of backups. Time Machine allowed users to back up their data automatically. This allowed people who did not have much technical knowledge to take backups. However, Apple does not make Time Capsule anymore. If you still want to continue using Time Machine, then read on.

Using an Attached Disk Drive

If you want to use an attached disk drive, then you need to follow the instructions given below.

  • First of all, you have to begin System Preferences on your device.
  • Then you should go to the Time Machine option.
  • You have to click on Select Backup Disk.
  • After that, choose the external Disk Device.
  • You should click on Use Disk.
  • Later, go to the Erase option to erase the drive.

Using Another MacBook:

Use a Remote MacBook

You can use a remote MacBook, follow the steps mentioned below.

  • Get started by going to the Finder on your device.
  • Then you should choose one of the hard drives & make a New Folder.
  • You have to change the name to Time Machine.
  • Thereafter go to the System Preferences.
  • Later, click on the Sharing.
  • Now, you have to turn on File Sharing.
  • After that, click on the +Add icon.
  • Then you should add the folder Time Machine which you have to create recently.
  • Go to the Time Machine & ctrl+click on it.
  • Choose Advanced Options.
  • Thereafter turn on the “Share as a Time Machine Backup destination” option.
  • You can use the most significant storage size.
  • Now, click on OK.

Using Local MacBook

If you want to use local MacBook, then you need to follow the instructions given below.

  • To get started, go to the System Preferences on your Mac.
  • Then you should choose Time Machine.
  • You have to click on Select Backup Disk.
  • Thereafter choose the Time Machine folder which we made on the remote machine.
  • Now, you should choose Use Disk.

Turn On Time Machine Backups on MacBook

You need to turn on Time Machine on MacBook, follow the steps mentioned below.

  • To begin with, go to the Apple menu & select System Preferences.
  • You should select the Time Machine icon.
  • Then click on the Select Backup Disk.
  • After that choose which disk you want to use as a Time Machine backup.
  • Now, tick the box of Back-Up Automatically in order to back up the MacBook to the selected disks automatically.

Restore Data from a Time Machine Backup

If you want to restore data from a Time Machine backup, then you need to follow the instructions given below.

  • First, you have to go to the Apple menu & select System Preferences.
  • Then you should select the Time Machine icon.
  • Tick the box of “Show Time Machine in the menu bar.”
  • Later, click on the Enter Time Machine once you have clicked on the Time Machine icon in the menu bar section.
  • Now, locate the file or folder in question & click on Restore.
