[How To] Fix 3 Common Car Problems in Winter?

by Lary Cook Sales Manager

Winter is here with snow, frost, and mist. A pleasure to look at the scenic beauty while in the comfort of your home but not so much in your car.

If you live nearby Doylestown, you know what I’m talking about. The winters not only give you the chills but also gives your car a hard time.

Dealing with ice and snow on your commute is already painful.

No matter how cold it is outside always ensure your car’s interior is clean. We know that freezing temperatures can also wreak havoc on your car more than you can imagine.

Solving 3 Common Winter Car Problems

  1. Frozen Doors/locks

When the temperature outside is freezing cold, it is no surprise that you wake up every other morning to find your car’s door frozen.

It might be troublesome when you need to rush to a place but your car won’t open up. There’s a way you can deal with this though, you could use Vaseline.

Apply Vaseline to the lock and put your key in to make sure it’s well distributed within the lock. This is a great way from preventing your locks from freezing.

However, if your lock has already frozen, you could use de-icer.

If not, you could also try heating up the key by holding it near a lighter. Once it’s well heated, you should insert it into the lock to melt the ice.

You could also try another way, a hairdryer. Yes, you can direct hot air from the dryer into the lock to melt the ice.

2. Foggy Windshield

Winters and fog go hand in hand. Especially early mornings or late evenings, as it’s darker than usual outside and fog disrupts your view.

It is very dangerous to you and other drivers on the road to drive with a fogged up windshield. You might find yourself on various occasions, trying to wipe it off with your wipers but that barely works.

And god forbid you spray water on it, you’ll find frozen windshield!

So, I’d recommend you to use a chalkboard duster. This quickly clears fog from your windows without leaving smudges behind.

Is there another alternative to this? Absolutely, you can blast air-conditioning for a bit on the windshield. This will eventually make the fog fade away.

3. Stuck Car

What if your own car or a rental car breaks down? Or gets stuck in the snow?

The tip of using kitty litter to get your car out from being stuck is pretty common. However, I personally don’t do that as I don’t carry cat litter around with me in my car.

So, I use floor mats behind my tires and get my car out with some traction.

Simply place your mats on the spot where your tires are spinning out. Then gently rock your car back and forth to build up some momentum. Your car will be free in no time.

If you live in snowy areas, you could simply save yourself of all the hassle and buy snow tires, so you don’t have to worry about being stuck.

When your car gets stuck deep into the snow and you have no other way out or in case the cold somehow manages to stop your car from functioning to its best, just hang in there and call for help.
