An island country located in the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka has a documented history that dates back 3000 years. Considering this fact, you can be sure of having some truly intriguing ancient ruins and historic sites in this destination. In fact, it is one of those few countries in the world, which has so many UNESCO World Heritage Sites in such a small geographical area. However, you need not feel unwelcome in this beautiful island destination if you're not much of a history buff, as it also has many other natural and cultural attractions in store for you.

You'll have a pleasant weather to enjoy your Sri Lanka holidays if you visit the island nation between December and April. This is a dry season in the western and southern coastal areas of the country. If you plan to visit during Christmas and New Year, it is advisable to book your holiday packages or hotel accommodations several months in advance, as this is the time when many tourists from different parts of the world visit Sri Lanka. Generally, the best time to visit this part of the world is between April and September. The months of October and November get heavy rainfall with the possibility of thunderstorms. It is, therefore, advisable to avoid travelling during these months.

The cheap holidays to Sri Lanka would allow you to explore some of its fascinating tourist attractions. Among them is Nuwara Eliya, a 19th-century hill station that has still managed to retain its colonial-era charm with gentlemen's clubs and a golf course. You can watch those cute baby elephants moving around with great joy during your visit to the Pinnawalla Elephant Orphanage. The Dambulla Cave Temple would be an excellent place to witness some amazing statues of Buddha. You can also make a trip to Adam's peak, which is a biodiversity hotspot and one of the popular UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Sri Lanka.

The journey would take you to the most beautiful locations in the country with wonderful views of mountains, tea plantations, and waterfalls. There are tested biking trails in Nuwara Eliya and you can enjoy a mountain biking expedition in this part of Sri Lanka with the help of any of the local tour operators.

During your time spent in Sri Lanka, you'll also get to savour its mouth-watering treats. The Fish Ambul Thiyal is one of the most popular varieties of seafood in this island nation. You can also try Kottu, a flatbread that is chopped and fried along with a selection of ingredients and served with a spicy curry sauce.
