Diagnose An Air Conditioning Unit In A Car
Diagnosing AC problems in a car may be a very complicated affair. You need to know a few things in order to understand whether the air conditioning unit is working properly or not.

Firstly if you find that the AC's switch is on maximum cool & fans are on high speed but still  the unit is blowing only fairly cool air, then it's high time you should find a professional mechanic or technician who can solve your problem. However, before consulting a technician to do the job for you, you can also do the followings yourself:

  • Examine to see if cooling fans that are on radiator or condenser are running while AC is on.
  • Find if there is any restrictions such as bugs, leaves or dirt, which generally keeps air from being passed through the condenser.
  • See cabin air filter to find out if it's clogged.
  • Check pressures in your system. You can find the recommended low-side and high-side pressures in repair manual.

If you've been able to find out the reason for the AC unit not working properly, good! But if you still haven't been able to pinpoint any reason, then leave it to the professionals.

It is also important for you to check the compressor whenever you detect an AC problem in your car. With engine running, just turn the AC on maximum, set the fans high & ensure the clutch engages on compressor. If it's not, make use of voltmeter to find the voltage that gets into the compressor. When there's voltage, clutch can be bad. And if there isn't any voltage then the cycle switch can be bad, the fuse can be blown & system may not even have sufficient refrigerant pressure for tripping low pressure cutoff switch.

Leaks are also a very common problem that's associated with an AC system. When pressure is quite low, there is high chance that there is a leak. But now how will you know whether there is a leakage in your system? What you can do in such a case is use a UV AC leak detector kit to find out if there is a leak. Just follow all instructions given on the package and you will be able for finding out the leak. You also need to:

  • Check out all the fittings in order to verify whether everything is secure.
  • Inspect the hose manifolds that are on compressor.
  • Examine font seal and o-rings that seal pressure switches that are on back of the compressors.
  • Check out schrader valves.
  • Find out if there are any pin holes in condenser.
