How to Create Picture Frames using DIY Tools?

Required materials:

  • Mats: Mats may be made up of cardboard or plain paper.

  • Picture frames: You can use one out of different type frames available in market. Frames are made up of wood, metal, plastic, steel and ceramics. Again, there are different types of wood and metal frames. In wooden frames, you can choose frames made up of cherry, walnut, oak, cedar, basswood, rosewood etc.

  • Frame covers: Frame covers are made up of real glass, plexi glass and plastic.

  • Joining materials: Wood filler, Glue and V nails.

Steps to create picture frames:

  • Pick a colorful mat of your choice. Measure the dimensions of your picture. Size of the Mat need to be according to your picture size.

  • Cut the mat by using a top quality bevel mat cutter and ruler.

  • Fix the picture to the mat with 2 small pieces of acid free tape on the top edge only.

  • Cut the picture frame by using following formula:

L = E + (2 x C) + (2 x W)

Where L = Length/Width of the measurement of the picture frame

E = Length/Width of the mat

C = Clearance around the mat

W = Width of the frame material

  • A hi-tech miter saw helps you to cut the corners of a picture frame in an easy manner. You can also use a power miter saw or a power table saw for an easier and more even wood pieces.

  • Now, you need to assemble the Picture, Mat and Picture frame carefully. You can use Cord Clamp or Steel Strap Clamp to secure the picture frame ready for joining. Use wood glue and V nails to fasten the parts of the picture frame.

  • For final designing and finishing, you can use varnish and paints. You can always adjust the size of the picture frame by trimming with a saw or trimmer. Hammer can be used to insert V-nails whereas you can use PushMaster to insert flexi points into the rear of your picture frame to secure everything at right place.

  • You can again use PushMaster tool to create screw hole at the rear of the picture frame and hang it on the wall.
