How To Create Half Drilled Gemstones For Jewelry making
by Akash Chauhan Google Marketing ConsultantJewellery has been used by
men and women for millennia for adorning the body and bring out the beauty.
Most of the jewellery is made from unreactive metals which keep their lustre
for long periods of time, along with gems and precious stones. There are lots
of loose gemstones available for jewellery making and these can sometimes be
quite easy to design. There are different categories of drilled gemstones
available for making jewellery and one of them is the half drilled gemstones.
There are hundreds of varieties of gemstones available of different colours -
both artificial and natural. But how they can be set on a piece of jewellery
depends on the drilling of these gems or beads.
Types of Drilling - Half Drilled Gemstones
There are quite a few
different types of drilling - centre drilled beads, head drilled beads, top
drilled beads and half drilled beads. In the centre drilled beads, the drill
goes through the bead all the way through the centre. Whereas in the head drilled
type, the drill moves horizontally through the top of the bead and in the top
drilled type, the drill is made vertically through the top of the bead.
In half drilled gemstones,
the beads would be drilled to a centre point, which would consist of a common drill
hole used generally on pearls or beads. This type of drilling makes it easy for
the beads to be latched on to pegs for earrings. This style of drill hole would
conceal the fitting making the bead the most prominent feature as it would be
perfect for making those little stud earrings =. This type of drilling can also
be used for adding a round bead or pearl feature to a ring. These half drilled
beads are attached to the peg findings with glue.
How to attach the gemstone?
A cementing formula is to be
used. Holding one ear stud in the hand, a small amount of the glue needs to be
added to the top of the peg from the centre of the earring. Next, the earstud
needs to be placed upright into a block of Styrofoam. The tip of the glue needs
to be inserted into the gemstone or the pearl hole and the tube needs to be
gently squeezed, thus injecting a small amount. The hole of the gemstone or
pearl needs to be placed on the peg and it needs to be held there for a few
seconds. The same thing needs to be repeated for the other earring.
Thus you can use the half
drilled loose
gemstones for jewellery making.
