Requirement and procedure for connecting a headset to Windows 10

No matter what type of headset it is or how it connects, Microsoft Windows 10 is compatible with both wired and wireless headsets. This means you don’t have to worry about your gadget; you only need to know the process of connecting. So, the requirements and procedure is here,

  • 3.5mm jack: Mostly older and affordable headphones have two cables with 3.5mm jack at the end. These cables are for making connections with the devices. The cable with green color is for the headset’s speaker, and the pink one is for the microphone. These headsets can connect and used with any compatible device easily as well as quickly. You just need to insert the right jack into the right port of the device.
  • Wireless: Most of the headphones are now coming without cable (wireless). These headsets are installed with Bluetooth connectivity for connecting and battery for power. However, they are a bit more expensive but provide you the features for your money. As there is no wire between your headset and computer, you’ll be able to sit and move more comfortably.
  • USB: However, headsets with USB are almost similar to headphones with 3.5 jacks, except the jacks. These headphones are integrated with more features, including inline amps, controls, and more.

All CPUs have 3.5 mm as well as USB ports on the body- some have few whereas some have more. Ports and their locations depend on the motherboard installed and the case of CPU. Most PCs have these ports on both, back and front side, only in few you’ll find them at the rear side. You can plug the cable(s) of your headset to any free port of the computer. In terms of sound quality, the sound card installed in your motherboards matters more than the headset.

Configuring and checking the sound output in your PC

After you connect the headset to your PC, now you’ve to setup and check the sound output. First of all, you need to view if Windows has selected your headset as the default output device. Here is how to check the default sound output in Windows 10 and change it.

1.   Simply click on the ‘Speaker’ icon in the taskbar. You will find this icon just left to the ‘Clock’ in the taskbar. This will pop up a dialog box at the left corner with the available speakers.

2.   Select ‘Sound device’ in the box.

3.   View and select your ‘Headphones’ from the options. If your headset isn’t showing here, check the connection or reconnect it.

Doing so configures your headset as default sound output device and transfers your PC sounds to it. You may want to test your headset to ensure that you’ve selected the right device and everything is going perfect. You can quickly test it by firing up any media application and playing a media on your PC. Here is how.

1.   Right-click the ‘Speaker’ icon in the taskbar.

2.   Select ‘Open sound settings’ from the options.

3.   Then select ‘Sound control panel’ from the right side.

4.   Now, choose your headphones. You’ll see a green tick on it.

5.   Click on the ‘Properties’ button at the bottom.

6.   Now, open the ‘Advanced’ tab and click on the ‘Test’ button.

Now, play music, movies, videos, or games, as usual, to enjoy with your headset.
