How to Choose the Right Seal for Your Pumps

by Sweta Shah HR Executive in Ambica Machine Tools
A mechanical pump is an extremely useful device. It helps in moving water and other fluids across large distances with minimum use of energy. For such an efficient device, you need a sturdy and durable seal to keep it in place and protect it from overflowing. Even though there are many mechanical seal manufacturers in India, it isn’t an easy task to choose the best one. The seal you choose must be compatible with the exact working conditions of your pump in order to provide ample seal performance. In order to help you get the best seal for your pump, here are some tips you can use.

Types of Seals

Before choosing the right type of mechanical seal for your pump, it is a good idea to first know about the types of seals there are.

Single Mechanical Seal

Single mechanical seals are the most common mechanical seals as they are the simplest and cheapest ones in the market. Their main drawback is that no matter how well they may be constructed, eventually they will begin to leak and can potentially cause damage to life and property. If you use these seals, it is important to either use a backup seal along with it or fix two seals at once.

Double Mechanical Seal

Double mechanical seals come in two designs – tandem and double. The tandem design features two independent seals oriented in the same direction while in double, they are in opposite directions. Tandem styled seals can withstand incredibly high pressures in the pump case, and the double styled ones feature a pressurized barrier liquid which gets circulated in the cavity. Most Teflon bellow mechanical seals fall under this category.

Fluid Type

The kind of fluid that is supposed to flow through the pump and seal makes a big impact on choosing the right seal. The material of the seal has to be chemically inert with the chemical flowing through the pump. This should stay the same at both high, and low pressures in order to avoid accidental damages. A lot of mechanical seal manufacturers in India will give you a list of chemicals their seals aren’t compatible with.

Pressure

The pressure of the pumping system and seal chamber is the final deciding factor when it comes to choosing a mechanical seal. Most mechanical pumps work by either increasing the pressure on the fluid or reducing it to make it flow, and your seal is supposed to withstand this pressure without cracking or breaking. Share your pressure readings with your retailer in order to get the best deal.

In conclusion, researching mechanical seals and which one is best suited for you is a good plan as it will help save you from damages. Following the above steps will help you select the perfect Teflon bellow the mechanical seal.
