How to choose paint colors for the exterior of your home?

by Amy Wax Amy Wax – International Color Consultant

Are you bored of your home’s exterior? Or, perhaps you want to sell it? Whatever the reason may be, painting is one of the most effective ways to perk up your home from the outside and increase its curb appeal. That being said, choosing the right outside paint colors is as important as any bad selection can make your home look dull and boring.

Light or dark colors?

As a general rule, softer, lighter colors typically brighten a house and make it appear more spacious. Deeper, darker colors, on the other hand, can more effectively draw attention to the architectural details of your home.

Trim/accents

A carefully chosen selection of contrasting trim and accent shades can bring the design facets of your home to the fore as well as mask any architectural flaws. Rich, bold accent tones are a good choice for doors and shutters. If you are painting the exterior of your home in order to sell it, a contrasting door shade can add to your home's curb appeal.

Building's architecture

Be sure to find out what the original colors of your home were. More often than not, the original color combinations are the most appealing for their particular building type. This is especially true for historic homes.

Still confused? You may want to consider hiring a professional color consultant. Their expert guidance can help you land on the perfect color palette for your home.
