How to Boot in Safe Mode on Windows 10

by Ashley Miller Engineer

While Windows is a powerful and flexible operating system, there are times when it can be very annoying. This frustration is mainly evident when a user tries to install the latest software or driver for new hardware. All of a sudden, the system locks up or crashes and loads an odd screen with the word Safe Mode.

What is it? Well, Safe mode is an exceptional way to load the system when there is a problem interferes with normal operations. Technically, its purpose is to allow users to troubleshoot the window to figure out the reason behind the problem. Here, you will know how to troubleshoot the system in Safe mode.

Techniques to Boot Windows 10 in Safe Mode

System Configuration Method:

  • Open Start Menu’s search bar and type MSConfig.
  • Choose the Best match to open the Boot tab.
  • Note the Boot Options and select the Safe Boot.
  • It will force your windows to boot into Safe Mode.
  • Select Minimal and click Ok to confirm it.

Additional Options to Configure System:

Users can also start the Safe Mode with the absolute minimal amount of services and drivers with the help of Windows GUI.

  • Access Safe Mode with the Command Prompt without using GUI. However, it requires enough amount of knowledge in text command and navigating windows without using the mouse.
  • Use the Active directory repair if you were unsuccessful in installing a new driver or software. It will help you by repairing it or adding new data to the directory.

Advanced Startup Method:

  • Click on the Start menu search bar and type Advanced Startup.
  • Choose the best match and tap on it to select the Restart now button.
  • It will reboot your system in recovery mode, in which you will see Continue, Troubleshoot, and Turn off your PC options.
  • Tap on Troubleshoot to select advanced options.
  • In doing so, you will see options to choose from.
  • Now select Startup Setting and reboot the system to enter into Safe Mode.

Tapping Method:

The most common technique to reach Safe Mode is to tap the F8 button on the keyboard during startup. By tapping on it, users were able to select the desired option to solve their problems accordingly. But in Windows 10, the F8 tapping method to open Safe Mode is disabled by default. However, you can still try with the help of Command Prompt, and that’s the only way present to access Safe Mode by tapping the F8 button.

What if nothing works? Even if none of those as mentioned earlier method works, then you still can use USB flash drive to directly access recovery mode.  Once you fix your Windows 10 problem, you need to leave Safe Mode. Otherwise, you will boot back into Safe Mode after each reboot. For that, all you need to do is shut down or restart the PC again to leave it.
