by Silvereye Certifications BIS Certification
The first question that pops up in your mind regarding this topic is surely what is e-waste, so let’s tell you that e-waste is electronic waste that is produced by electronic devices that is definitely not like an organic compound, it can be only recycled and reused. The e-waste is rapidly growing in today’s generation. And the e-waste management is also known as urban mining, a process in which the parts of e-waste are extracted to sell or reuse.

According to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), report says that only a small percentage of e-waste is recycled. The e-waste management falls under ministry of electronics and Information technology. The management of e-waste is necessary to keep our environment safe and clean. That means it is not a disposable waste. There are some rules and regulations made in India regarding this. Now, the thing is that why it is necessary for an e-waste management team or recycler to go through a certification process.

The answer is here, its because e-waste contains many toxic materials such as mercury, lead, cadmium and many more. By getting a certification it assures that the organization is abiding by the data security standards. Data security is essential for both an individual as well as for an organization because many transactions takes place electronically which is helpful in the daily life.

Do you know, what is a BIS certification? Its like an approval or a means for providing the guarantee to the other third party or organization about quality, safety and reliability of the product to the customer by initial testing and assessment of a factory quality, management system and its acceptance is followed by surveillance that takes into account, the factory quality management system and the testing of samples from the factory and the market. And the government of India has made BIS certification mandatory to certain products as considering public health and obviously e-waste is not good for human’s health.

BIS Certification can be obtained from the bureau of Indian Standards, empowered through the Act of Indian Parliament. Usually BIS Certification is voluntary in nature. And its mandatory to the products having ISI mark in consideration to health. All BIS certification are carried out in accordance with Indian Standards which are docile or controllable to certification. Other than normal product certification, BIS also grants license to Eco-friendly products.

For e-waste certification, industry certification programs set requirements for a safe recycling and disposal of e-waste. The Responsive Recycling(R2), Recycling Industry Operating Standard(RIOS) and e-Stewards programs include guidelines that define responsive and a better effective e-waste management. To handle your certification requirements for RIOS, R2 and e-Stewards, there is an organization named as NSF International Strategic Registrations(NSF-ISR).

Now, here is the certification process. Firstly, you have to fill out an application and agree to the terms and conditions, then the authority will assign an audit and fix a schedule, then all of your details like manual, documentation, objectives and targets will be reviewed, once your documentation meets the requirement, an on-site review will be conducted to verify processes match with your written system or statements.

If you were not granted access in stage 2 then you will be given 90 days to respond and show the evidence of correction, after this the certification committee will provide you the final review of the entire audit package. Once approved you will receive a certificate for 3 year time-span.
