How is Second Opinion Different from First Opinion?
by Subrat Viswas Swasth Bhoomi Pvt.LtdThe second opinion is highly valuable for a patient’s health as it acts as a
saviour in the patient’s life. A single wrong diagnosis and treatment can
deteriorate the present condition of a patient. The treatment for cancer is
very expensive and in worst cases, it may prove deadly with a single diagnostic
error.
In the
case of the detection of a rare type of cancer, it becomes even more important
to take a second decision to avoid ineffective treatment. The second opinion
provides confidence and peace of mind to the patient.
It
helps to evaluate whether the first doctor's opinion gets affected by a second opinion or not. It is observed in many cases that the initial doctor
suggested surgery but after taking the second opinion the patient opted for
non-surgical treatment and the same proved beneficial to them.
The second opinion confirms the first doctor’s opinion or can provide guidance on
the latest available options and may result in the differential diagnosis. In
the case of the second opinion, the patient can decide on their treatment plans
by considering the outcome of it.
A recent study found that in 66% of
the cases, a second opinion has refined the original diagnosis and in 21% of
cases the second opinion resulted in the final diagnosis that notably varied
from the original course of treatment.
To
obtain the right diagnosis it is important to remain aware of the complete
spectrum of options. A second opinion has the potential to deliver better
treatment options.
Opinion of a physician other than the patient's current physician. Other doctors review the patient's medical record and give an opinion about the patient's health problem.
