HOW IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE HELPING SMART CITIES IN TRACKING DOWN CRIMINALS?

by Manat Banerjee Digital Content Artist

Artificial intelligence can help police match faces from criminal databases and identify potential suspects of a crime. Recorded videos, still face images and suspect sketches can be used to prepare a profile of criminals.

Smart cities are increasingly facing the problem of criminals who dodge the police. They are becoming a threat to the security of the cities. NEC India has deployed many state-of-the-art systems that use artificial intelligence to bring them into the dragnet of the law.

Artificial Intelligence is a technology becoming more relevant for law enforcement agencies as they help reduce the manual effort required. It also reduces errors and omissions, which may cause a lapse in the effort to tighten security.

While many cities have opted for AI systems for security, Surat and Delhi are experiencing positive results. Facial Recognition is one of the aspects where AI is becoming a savior. NeoFace Watch is a face recognition technology that uses AI to match faces from the entire criminal database and provide information to law enforcers instantly.

NeoFace Reveal is another AI solution that can enable the police force to have a complete profile of criminals at their fingertips. Recorded videos, still face images, and suspect sketches can be used for this purpose. It assists law enforcement agencies in quickly identifying suspects from a range of media, including poor-quality CCTV and video surveillance.

This face recognition technology enhances poor-quality images, searches against mugshot repositories and locates potential candidates quicker and more accurately than ever before.

Surat Police has been able to set up a Picture Intelligence Unit using these face recognition technologies. Because of their search accuracy as well as the speed of their face recognition algorithms, they are receiving all-around accolades.

In collaboration with C-DAC, an autonomous scientific body, the IT solutions provider has established a pan-city network of CCTVs in Delhi with AI video analytics. This is to aid the on-field police officers with real-time updates for quick action on the alarms that the system generates. An integrated command & control system helps in generating the alerts.
