How high school-level writing differs from college-level writing

by Jennifer Palumbo Writer

You’re in college – finally. You’ve passed all the tests, graduated from high school, moved into your dorm and started your new life. Many changes happen socially when you transition from high school to college, but something that fresh college students tend to overlook is how they change academically and the new standards that need to be put in place regarding their writing techniques.

High school isn’t easy, but academic writing is pretty streamlined when it comes to writing styles for 9-12 grades. Students don’t typically start learning about style guides until junior or senior year, and even then, it doesn’t have as strong of a focus as college-level writing.

Academic essay writing

I remember my freshman year of college and my introduction to deeper levels of style guides. I went into my college career choosing journalism as my major with a minor in English. I pictured myself as a seasoned journalist who knew the ways of the world and would excel to new heights as a writer. I thought I had the writing world figured out and never thought I would have a blank Word doc on my screen in front of me for one hour … two hours … three hours. Then say, “I’ll get to this tomorrow” and walk away. Quite frankly, it blew my mind and sent me into a whirlwind of not knowing if I was following the style rules correctly. Writing in college has many levels. Depending on the major you have chosen, different writing styles for academic papers apply that you may notbe aware of in high school. English majors follow MLA style, journalism majors follow AP style and science majors focus on APA style.

Manuals are provided to show students the “ins and outs” of these specific academic writing styles, but having assistance from writers who are familiar with these writing techniques can help you, as a new student, immensely.

References, layout, plagiarism, flow – there are a lot of things to think about when writing your academic paper. Professional writing services can save a student’s credibility by showing him or her how to cite references properly, how to provide the correct layout according to the type of paper written and how to format an academic paper in a professional way. Certain style guides have different rules for punctuation. One guide might require a title page, another may not. It’s important to know what the requirements of your professor are and to really dive into a style guide and its components. You may get your bachelor degree and move into the working world, or you may pursue your academic career further, requiring more professional writing styles. It’s perfectly fine to ask for help and rely on the assistance of professionals who have written hundreds of papers and know how to fine-tune your words in a clear and intelligent way.

So don’t worry. When you get your first college assignment to write on the ways that Shakespeare’s works bring society together, panic may set in but academic writing professionals, like Websay Writers, can ease the fear a bit and teach you something along the way.
