How Frequently Do I Need to Change My Furnace Air Filter?

by Robert Morgan airzonehvac

Furnace air filters are installed along with the furnace to ensure better air quality and the furnace's longevity. Some furnaces already come equipped with an air filter, while others don't. In such a case, you can install an external air filter cabinet that connects to the return air duct. Air filters need regular change, and the interval can range between 1 month to 12 months. But how can you determine how frequently you need to change the filter? Here are some important points that determine the frequency:

1. The filter's thickness: Filters are available in different sizes, from 1 inch to 5 inches. The thickness of the filter determines how efficiently air can flow through it. If the filter is thinner, more air passes through it at once, so it needs to be changed more frequently. 1- or 2-inch filters should be changed every 1 to 3 months. 3- or 4-inch filters need changing every 6 to 9 months, and 5-inch filters need changing every nine months to a year.

2. MERV rating: The MERV rating system determines how efficient the air filter is. The higher the MERV rating, the more efficient they are. Filters with an 11 MERV rating are considered standard, although you can find filters rated 13 or even 16 MERV. 16 MERV filters can deliver hospital-quality air. However, the higher the MERV rating, the more frequently you need to change the filter.

3. Allergies: If you suffer from certain airborne allergies such as dust or pollen allergies, you need to change your filters more often. This is because, with time, your filter will get clogged and become less efficient at catching the allergens.

4. Pets: If you have furry pets such as dogs, cats, or rabbits, then your house is filled with their fur. This fur is then taken up through the air vents and collects in the furnace filter. This can significantly reduce the life of a filter. So, a more frequent filter change is recommended.

5. Furnace usage: The furnace is most used during the winter months. So, during the winter, you will collect more particles in the filter. Therefore, you should frequently change your filter during or after the winter months.

Changing the furnace filter is not only important for the health of the furnace but also your own health. Most filters will come with a recommended replacement time, but these above factors need to be taken into account to understand exactly when you should change the filter.
