Today we spend much of our time looking at the digital screens as it is the demand of time. We depend on laptops, computers, smartphones, and tablets for work as well as for entertainment. It is not wrong in saying that digital devices are a great part of our lives today. The time we spend on looking at the digital screen before bedtime can bring a lot of consequences. The artificial light coming from the digital screens can prevent you from getting sufficient sleep and rest.

You may be eager to know how the bright light coming out from the digital screens affect your sleep pattern. So, we will discuss how blue light coming from the digital screens hampers your sleep pattern. It lowers your sleep hormone, melatonin. Melatonin is a hormone that regulates your sleep and wake cycle. The pineal gland in the brain is the source of melatonin production. Devices like laptops, smartphones, and tablets emit blue rays, and these rays are proven to delay the release of melatonin. And what is the result when this occurs? Our internal body clock is disturbed, and you start getting less sleep.

There are many more ways to how blue light affects your sleep. These high energy rays act as sunlight, resulting in alertness. When you use digital devices to read or view videos, alertness will increase and you will face a problem falling asleep quickly.  Blue light also rearranges your body’s internal clock. Your circadian rhythm uses light to adjust your body with the day-night patterns on the outside environment. The rays of the sun stimulate your body to wake up in the morning and the sunset works in the evening to release melatonin in the body which helps you to go to sleep. As you spend more time looking at electronic devices, your internal clock is disturbed, and you start getting less sleep.

We all know that blue light has a shorter wavelength and higher color temperature. So, it affects the level of melatonin levels in the body. Its higher color temperature stimulates alertness that prevents a person from getting a sound sleep. Not only sleep disruption, blue light can also affect and damage the retina. These harmful rays can reach deep into your eyes, affecting the cells and the blood vessels. Overexposure to blue light can damage your retina and can gradually lead to age-related macular degeneration.

Eye experts suggest limiting the use of digital devices, especially before bedtime. You can also start using blue light blockers for sleep improvement. Regular use of blue-ray protection lenses can prevent blue light from entering your eyes. This can improve your sleeping pattern. Start using dim lights for activities in the evening and opt for red and yellow light bulbs instead of using LED and blue bulbs in your bedrooms.

So, take effective steps and stick to a healthy lifestyle if you want to get better sleep every night. It will be helpful in the long run.
