How did Surrogacy start and what are its Notable Landmarks?

Surrogacy is now a very commonly used method to conceive a bay. Mostly this method is used by the mother or parents who are unable to conceive the baby naturally, but there are also many other reasons for doing it. The surrogacy method has evolved very much in the current times with the use of advanced technologies.

 

Things were very different when the method has started in the past. The shortage of options made it very difficult to perform the process. The practice of traditional surrogacy started a thousand years ago. Even, the bible has the mention of surrogacy.

History of the surrogacy

Gestational surrogacy has a very different history compared to traditional surrogacy. As mentioned above, traditional surrogacy is very old and performed for ages, but very recently the gestational surrogacy has started. Following the events of in-vitro-fertilization in 1978, egg donation in 1982, in 1985 with the help of these two processes the gestational surrogacy was performed. And it has evolved very much in the past 20 years and also got very much attention from the parents.

 

But the path of surrogacy was not smooth; they had to face many problems and hurdles in the way. One of the 1st problems occurred when in 1986, one traditional surrogate decided to keep the child after giving birth. The legal problems have started with the decision of the woman; it was stretched for around 2 years. After the legal battle between the intended parents and the surrogate mother, the intended parents have retained the custody.

 

This case was named “the Baby M case” and it raised many questions about gestational surrogacy throughout the different countries of the world. Now the method is not legal in all the countries in the world. The countries where commercial surrogacy is legal are the US state, Russia, India, Ukraine, and many other countries. If you belong to any country where surrogacy is illegal, then you will have to travel to the legal countries to perform surrogacy.

 

The surrogacy developed a big step in the year of 1999 when the special program started. The program SPAR (Special Program of Assisted Reproduction) was launched for HIV positive men. It helped them to become the biological father of their child without the chance of transmitting HIV or any kind of disease. In 2011, things got up one notch when a 61 years old woman became a mother and carried her grandchildren.

●     1980 - The first contract was written by Noel Keane, a lawyer of Michigan

●     1985 - In the USA, the first successful gestational the surrogate was done by a woman

●     1986 - The case of “Baby M” happened this year. In this the incident, the surrogate mother refused to hand over the baby.

●     1990 - Just like the case of “Baby M”, a woman named Anna Johnson refused to hand over the baby.
