How Can You Preserve A Safe Level Of Chlorine In Your Swimming Pool?

by Liz Seyi Digital marketing manager

Chlorine is vital in a swimming pool. This chemical can take just a few seconds to kill nearly any bacteria or viruses that bathers bring with them into the water. However, it is important to make sure this chlorine remains at the correct level for swimmers’ safety.

Chlorine helps to preserve a swimming pool's cleanliness

If you regularly swim at a public indoor Swimming Pool Covers, you have chlorine to thank for keeping the pool hygienic even as more and more members of the public join you in the water. That ‘chlorine smell’ comes from the chloramines that result as the chlorine kills dirt from bathers.

Naturally, if your home includes your own private pool, you might often share it with other people, such as friends and family members. Therefore, this pool would need chlorine which, when added to the water, becomes what is known as ‘free chlorine’.

What level of free chlorine would be recommended in your case?

This depends on the type of water body to be sanitised. In the UK, the owners of public indoor swimming pools target a free chlorine level between 1.0 and 1.5 ppm – that’s ‘parts per million’. However, these pools have advanced chemical dosing and control systems that your domestic pool may lack.

For this reason and others, the free chlorine in domestic pools is usually maintained at a slightly higher level, with a range of 1.0 to 2.0 recommended for an indoor pool and 2.0 to 3.0 advised for an outdoor pool. This level is also strongly suggested for hot tubs and spas.

Ways of testing your pool's chlorine level

In a pool, chlorine is at least 10 times more important to test than any other chemical. Hence, you must test that chlorine regularly – and you can do so with either test strips or a more conventional tablet-based kit, both of which we stock here at Pool Warehouse.

You can also order Swimming Pool Chemicals from our online store – and in the process, save as much as 60% off the usual price. Our current range includes chlorine tablets, chlorine granules and pool algaecide.
