by Jack K. Digital Marketing

Mouth plaque is the sticky, colorless film created by bacteria that builds upon the teeth.  It gives your teeth a yellow color. It settles on your teeth both above and below of your gum line. It looks dirty if not removed but also it can damage your teeth and gums. When mouth plaque gets harder it is known as dental calculus (tartar). It has negative effects on your oral health.

How Plaque Affects Oral Health

Whenever plaque is allowed to build up on teeth and along your gums, it can cause serious oral health conditions. Plaque can lead to cavities, gum disease which is a serious concern. It can cause cosmetic problems and if you drink highly pigmented beverages like tea, coffee, your tartar can become darker.

How to Prevent Plaque Formation

  • To prevent plaque formations brush your teeth twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Pay attention to space where gums and teeth meet.
  • Regular flossing between teeth at least once a day to remove all the food particles and bacteria from in between.
  • Dentist suggests to regular dental check-ups, this will also help to prevent and treat many other oral problems too.
  • Antibacterial mouth rinse should be used to reduce bacteria from the mouth that cause plaque and gum diseases.
  • Have a balanced diet; if you are having a diet which is not proper and balanced then also plaque can take place. Vegetables like celery help to remove food and also neutralize the plaque-causing acids present in our saliva.

Ways to Remove Plaque

  • Good Oral Hygiene

If plaque gets harder then it becomes tartar and it can’t be removed with the help of a toothbrush. People can get good results using a manual toothbrush but an electric toothbrush with oscillating heads are more effective to remove plaque and gingivitis. After brushing and flossing the mouth, it is also important to rinse the mouth with an antibacterial mouthwash. Many types of mouthwash contain fluoride which provides extra protection from plaque.

  • Brushing With Baking Soda

To brush with baking soda is an effective and safe way to remove plaque. Without damaging enamel we can remove plaque with the help of baking soda. Rather than your regular toothpaste, start using toothpaste that contains baking soda that will be more effective. Baking soda can reduce demineralization because it has high pH and prevents enamel loss from your mouth.

  • Oil Pulling Using Coconut Oil

To remove bacteria from the mouth and improve oral health oil pulling is also an effective way. Coconut oil has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, fatty acid and lauric acid with antimicrobial properties which makes coconut oil ideal for oil pulling. One can place one tablespoon of warm coconut oil in the mouth and swish it around the mouth for 10- 15 minutes and spit out into the trash. If coconut oil is not available then olive oil, almond oil, and sesame oil are some effective types of oil you can use for oil pulling of plaque from the mouth.

  • Contact A Dentist

Hygienist always prefers to consult a dentist if you are having any problem with your teeth. In the case of plaque consulting a dentist will be an effective and smart way to get your teeth professionally clean to look sparkling and white.
