How Are the Social Work Organizations in India Bettering the Lives of the Elders?

by Kanan James NGO INDIA

Social work organizations are a group of people who work for the betterment of the society and its people. In the field of social work, there are over 30 professional organizations. In India, the members of the social service organizations are from all over the country. These organizations work to establish social justice, human rights and sustainable development.

These organizations especially the old age homes are doing a commendable job in making the society a better place to live in. An ageing population goes through many difficult situations that often remain unattended. Studies suggest that a majority of the geriatric population suffers from higher rates of mortality and morbidity because of various infectious diseases. The 52nd round of National Sample Survey Organization suggests that around half of the geriatric population is entirely dependent on their families whereas another 20% is moderately dependent for their requirements especially relating to the economy.

Here are some of the assistance provided by the NGOs for senior citizens -

Mobile Healthcare

According to a study, the population of the elders ageing above 80 is likely to reach 4.8 million by the end of 2025. These people suffer from chronic diseases such as arthritis, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, asthma and so on. The mobile care units help the needy and destitute elders who are unable to move out of their houses for treatment. These units each has a doctor, a social worker and a pharmacist. The units provide medical care at the doorsteps of the people in need even by going to the remote slums and villages.

Physiocare

This is the program run by non profit organizations that deal with helping elders who are suffering from musculoskeletal diseases such as arthritis, pain in joints, pain in back and neck and others that restrict body mobility. Amenities under the physiocare include mobile services, home visits by physiotherapists and physiotherapy clinics.

In cases of Disasters`

During natural calamities, the elderly lot have a greater risk to suffer due to ageing complexities. Hence, they are the most vulnerable during disasters and suffer the most. NGOs during such cases are often the one to reach out first to the victims and provide relief with shelter, food, clothing, medication etc. not only to the elders but the entire community at large. Besides, they also establish long-lasting rehabilitation programs. The NGOs have previously provided relief to the victims of Tsunami, earthquakes, floods, cloudbursts etc.

Cancer care

As we all know, cancer care in India is immensely expensive and senior citizens from poor financial backgrounds cannot afford the much-needed treatment. The majority of the elders are not even covered by any form of medical insurance. Providing cancer treatment to the needy however, is a challenging task but the NGOs today have been successful in catering to palliative care to the end-stage cancer patients.

Thus, the NGOs in India are doing a brilliant job in making the society worth living for the senior citizens. Be a part of such organizations either by making contributions or becoming a volunteer who participates in various programs and initiatives taken by these organizations.
