How are the ikkat sarees manufactured in India?

by Aarushi Reddy studant

The most popular clothing item is saree in the Indian sub-continent. However, the manufacturing of saree is not restricted to a single type. The fabrication of saree is divided into five regions of India. According to the names, they are as follows-

•North region

•South region

•East region

•West region

•Central region

The eastern part of India is famous for its ikkat sarees wholesale production. Ikkat sarees get their name from the ikkat dying technique which is used to pattern textiles that employ resist dyeing on the yarns before dying and weaving the fabric.

A distinctive feature of ikkat sarees is the blurriness in the design of these sarees. This blurriness is due to the extreme difficulty the weaver has lining up the dyed yarns which are vital so that the pattern comes out entirely in the finished cloth. This blurriness is a distinctive feature of these sarees and sold at high prices.

The following are the types of ikat production-

•Warp ikat- In this technique, it is the warp that is dyed using the ikat technique. The pattern of ikat is visible in the warp yarns wound onto the loom even before the weft is woven in.

•Weft ikat- In weft ikat, it is the weaving pattern which carries the dyed patterns. The patterns only appear after the weaving proceeds.

•Double ikat- This technique involves both warp and weft getting resist-dyed before weaving. It is most difficult and expensive in all the methods.

•Pasapalli ikat- It is one of the gorgeous Ikkat saree and Pasapalli ikat saree made in Odisha.

In southern India, silk is known by the name of pattu. The banarasi silk and Kanchipuram silk sarees are two of the most famous silk sarees in IndiaPattu silk sarees are also the most sold in the whole Indian sub-continent.
