How advertisements and marketing evolved with age?

History of advertisements can be dated back to ancient civilizations. Political campaigns and commercial letters can be found in the artifacts of archaic Egypt, Arabia and Pompeii.  Wall paintings, signboards, and trademarks were used in pre-modern times to attract the attention of the general public about important events and issues.

Modern use of adverts can be dated back to late 19th to early 20th century. Capitalist economy probably used an AD agency to do their mass marketing through television, radio or through direct mails.

With the advent of internet and mobile applications, the use Creative agency have skyrocketed, with 2.2 percent of U.S. GDP used for advertisements from 1919 to 2007.  

Some of the famous events related to advertisements will be discussed below for your nostalgia:

1)    Feminism- representation of females in media, nudity and abundance of female beauty products bought a wave of advertisement campaigns from the early 20th century.

 2)    Racism- representation of non-white races as stereotypes, non-inclusivity and diversity were few of the racial issues which were highlighted throughout 20th and 21st century.

 3)    War- propaganda, recruitment and patriotic slogans became a part of war advertisements

 4)    Tobacco- filter and no filter cigarettes, hazards of cigarette smoking to health and anti-tobacco ads became a part of global media through advertisements.

 5)    Public service- PR agency appointed by government or private companies bought in activism and awareness related promotions to general public.

 6)    Teleadvertisements- Telebrands and QVC channels are still running as DTH promotions today.

 7)     MTV- music videos or using jingles for ads became a trend in late 70’s and 80’s.

 8)    Interactive advertisements- after the discovery of computers and internet, interactive media such as images and videos became a part of daily marketing campaigns

 9)    Digital marketing – personalized ads based on user behavior and performances comes under the term of digital marketing.

 10) Youtube- YouTube or any other social media advertisement is an invention of 21st century technologies.

 Other than these examples, companies such as Flags communications provide brand management, media buys and press releases for the new practitioners of modern advertisements campaigns.
