House of world's largest cannon on the wheels -Jaigarh Fort, Rajasthan

This magnificent royal construction is located at a distance of just 12 km from Jaipur. Let’s have a look at some of the interesting facts about this mesmerizing monument.

  • About the Fort:  The Jaigarh Fort is a spectacular palatial structure situated on the ‘Cheel ka Teela’ hills which resembles a piece of jewel on a crown. It was built in the year 1726 by Sawai Jaisingh ll to guard the Amer Fort and the entire region. Located at a height of 500 feet above sea level it was also considered as a storehouse of all the war armours, cannons, arms and ammunition.
  • The architecture of the Fort:  This royal structure is a symbol of the medieval construction style and is filled with stunning interiors. It is made up of thick walls of red sandstone and is spread over 3 km. This fort is connected to the Amer Fort with the subterranean passage. There is a Persian style garden, assembly hall, museum, armoury, Laxmi Vilas, Lalit Mandir, Aram Mandir and the Villas Mandir.
  • Jaivana Cannon: It is the largest wheeled cannon in the world. This 50-tonne cannon rests on 6 massive wheels. Four pairs of bulls rotated the gear system. About 100 kg of gunpowder fired a shot ball weighing 50 kgs. The design of cannon is floral with an elephant resting on the tip of the barrel and a pair of peacocks are carved in the centre. This giant weapon was used only once for trial but was never a part of a war.
  • Rain harvesting system: It is excellent in design and is still being used at the Fort. Since the Fort is situated at an elevation, water scarcity was a major problem and in order to solve this issue, three water tanks with the capacity of 60 lacs gallons of water were constructed along with many wide water channels.
  • How to reach: Jaigarh Fort can be reached from Jaipur easily via road. Even, if your stay is in a hotel near Jaipur Airport you can take a cab, auto rickshaw or a bus. If you visit Amer Fort first then, there is a connecting path of around 1 km from Amer Fort to Jaigarh Fort. Use this steep path to see the panoramic view of Aravali range, Amer Fort and Maotha lake.
  • Entry fee and timings: This palace is open from 9:30 a.m. till 5:00 p.m. and fee for Indian Nationals is Rs 70/- and for foreigners is Rs 150/-. It takes approximately one hour to visit the Fort. The best time to visit this fort is between October and March as the weather is quite pleasant during this time.
