Horrific Auto Accidents In Recent U.S. History

by Fusion 360 Studios Digital Marketing Specialists

Auto accidents are unfortunately a regular part of being on the road for drivers in Utah and across the nation. Various factors can contribute to auto accidents such as weather, unexpected elements on the road and pedestrians. Now with everybody being addicted to their phones, a whole new level of distraction has been introduced to drivers nationwide.

Thankfully, most auto accidents consist of two or three cars at the most, and everybody walks away healthy. In other instances, however, victims aren’t so lucky. Thousands of fatal auto accidents occur in Utah and across the U.S. each year, and we’ve put together a few of the worst in recent American history.

On May 14, 1988, the most fatal bus accident took place in Carrollton, KY. The bus was filled with children who were all on a church trip to the amusement park when a drunk driver hit the bus head on. The intoxicated driver was speeding in the wrong direction on I-71 in a Toyota pickup truck when he struck the bus.

The impact ruptured the gas tank in the bus and it almost immediately went up in flames. Of the 66 passengers on board, 27 died and 34 were severely injured. The driver of the pickup was unharmed, but was sentenced to 16 years behind bars.

Two of the mothers of crash victims became president and vice president of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, a renowned association in Utah and nationwide.

A separate notable accident occurred on Dec. 11, 1990 in Tennessee. This crash is a great example of how drastic weather fluctuations can cause highly dangerous driving conditions.

It was 9 a.m. when a think layer of fog rolled on and covered a busy stretch of I-75. Warning signs had been posted, but drivers underestimated the severe lack of visibility approaching. This resulted in a 70-car pile-up and 13 fatalities. Countless vehicles were engulfed in flames and over 30 different fire departments responded to the call.

After this accident, the state of Tennessee introduced a new fog warning system to keep drivers safe. Additionally, reflective markers and flashing lights were installed to help drivers in low visibility conditions.

While not every accident is of this magnitude, each one can be physically, emotionally and financially damaging. If you or a loved on has been seriously injured and wrongfully treated following an auto accident, contact a personal injury attorney in Utah or a location near you to receive the financial compensation you deserve.
