Home Renovations: The Most Monetary Rewarding Hobby on the Market

by Zack Halliwell Freelance Writer

Hobbies can come in many forms and no two hobbies are ever the same. You may even, sometimes, be the only practitioner of your hobby that you will ever know in real life! But, that doesn’t mean that it should be any less rewarding. And, in fact, some hobbies can actually be monetarily rewarding rather than just fun to do. Some can even reap large rewards.

Do you want a hobby which will put some money in your pocket when things are all said and done? Then home renovations is the best way to ensure a big return on investment, though you may not see it until years later.

With that in mind, here are some vital things to consider when renovating your home as a hobby, especially when it comes to the later monetary value of your home.

Convert Unused Spaces

If you have an attic or a basement which currently hosts a collection of boxes, then you have sorely unused space. This could easily be converted and then used for better means, especially if you have no need for an extra bedroom. A fun, social, space outside of the living room can be great for your family. As it allows for extra room for your hobbies or creativity to take place. It can also, then, be an attractive draw for anyone looking to buy your home in the future.

Of course, if you don’t have an attic or basement then you can still make use of this conversion tactic. Adding extra, built-in, storage space to any room can be of great value. Opening out a nook in a wall, inserting storage into a hallway wall or even just creating space in the eaves of certain rooms can be of value. Even using the space under your bath can be a great place to store cleaning supplies and similar.

This should always be the first step taken before adding new space in an extension, as you may be surprised by how much space your home truly has. You only have to open it all up for use first!

Re-Plaster and Then Paint Walls

The appearance of walls is something which can be changed in the space of a day; sometimes less! So, why not use this quick flash renovation technique to improve the appearance of your home almost instantly. Not only will you have a new look to enjoy yourself, but it can also be valuable if you want to improve the aesthetics of your home for an important event (such as house viewings when you’re looking to sell).

Painting is also a great way to unleash your creative side and a fun hobby all around. If you’re feeling stressed then unleashing yourself in a bare room with a can of paint is a fabulous remedy!

Consider the Garden

Outside is almost as important as the inside in 2019 and it can make a great hobby space! Gardening isn’t just for older people with lots of leisure time anymore, rather it’s becoming a hobby that every person can enjoy. And with garden space slowly becoming less available in modern homes, having a nice garden to boast of can really improve your home’s value.

Renovating your garden can come in many forms, making this a very diverse path for your hobby to take. It can include the construction of sheds, patios or even ponds depending on your preferences. Then, of course, there is the flowers and actual nature itself. This can be a really rewarding hobby, especially if you have what is known as a ‘green thumb’.

You can grow beautiful flowers, your own vegetables and even fruit if the desire takes you! Plenty of people have a patch of garden where they grow tomatoes, strawberries and even lots of herbs. All of which you can tailor to your garden and whatever culinary preferences you might have.

Add Memorable Features

When you are buying or selling a house, one thing you will begin to do is remember and talk about homes based on their features. And as such, giving your home something memorable to talk about can be invaluable in the selling process, even if it’s just a stunning piece of modern living room furniture. Depending on your hobby, it can also be really fun to make!

For example, a wood maker might create a breathtaking chandelier of all different shapes and cuts of wood. While a sewer might create an intricate wall piece for the living room or another, prominent, feature wall. Whatever your hobby, more than likely you will be able to create something which stands out and makes your home memorable. This can then easily reward you later as the ‘conversation’ piece that people later remember and then speak about your house in the context of this fabulous hobby piece.

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, renovating your home can be a great hobby in itself and it helps that, eventually, you will be able to reap those financial rewards. Maybe even sooner than you expect!
