Hindi Movies That Projected Big Fat Indian Weddings

by Himani Sharma Writer

It’s not called the land of ‘big fat Indian weddings’ for nothing. Not just the real weddings but Bollywood has a long lineage of wedding movies with all the essential spice mix; from dance to songs and from drama to romance. These movies have a familiar feeling around them with ceremonies like haldi, mehendi, sangeet, and the actual wedding.

Gorgeous people brightening up the silver screen in fancy clothes, lavish decors, song and dance with total fun; it all makes you feel one of ours is getting married.

Band Baaja Baaraat

The name says it all! The movie revolved around the dreams and aspirations of a wedding planner wanting to make it big in the world. There tags along the boy and the duo nails every wedding from Janakpuri to Sainik Farms with ease and élan. The fancy costumes, lavish sets, and the wedding jazz made this movie all-time masala wedding movie.

Vivah

The movie starts with a wedding proposal for a metropolitan boy with a small town, shy and coy girl ending up in a whirlwind of emotions when the girl suffers life-threatening burns and the family feared marriage calling off. The movie had all typical wedding movie ingredients with old-school romance by writing letters and calling on fixed-line phones to a shy and underrated courtship period. The film was loved by all and was a huge success.

Monsoon Wedding

One of the most loved and earliest wedding movies of all time, Monsoon Wedding is the story of a stressed-by-wedding father, distracted-by-secret lover bride, a smitten wedding planner, and a house full of relatives from all corners of the world. The most authentic wedding film had elaborate scenes from prepping for the arranged marriage in India to the actual ceremonies. Dubeyji’s character was a cult one!

Bride and Prejudice

Indian and fusion adaption of Jane Austen’s popular novel ‘Pride and Prejudice’, this Gurinder Chadha directed movie revolved around the story of four unwedded sisters and their loud mommy who ends up making the whole world listen to her agony because of her unmarried daughters. The film, however, was quite close to the novel in terms of authenticity of events and the lead protagonist weds her Prince Charming in the end.

Dolly Ki Doli

Well, that’s a twist to the core wedding-based Hindi movies as this one revolved around a bride that conned men into marrying her and then robbed them off all their money on the wedding night itself. The movies have some series of interesting weddings, entertaining suitors, and captivating stories. The bride’s character is played by Sonam Kapoor and all the stories she projected with different men were hilarious and engaging.
